CANTON, Ga. The first letter went out on Aug. 4, one day after students in the Cherokee County School District returned to their classrooms for the first time since the eruption of the coronavirus pandemic.
Dear Parents, wrote Dr. Ashley Kennerly, the principal of Sixes Elementary School. I am writing this letter in order to communicate that a student in 2nd grade has tested positive for Covid-19.
By the time the last bell rang on Friday afternoon, principals at 10 other schools had sent similar letters to families in Cherokee County, a bucolic and politically conservative stretch of suburbs north of Atlanta. This week, more letters went out.
Altogether, nearly 1,200 students and staff members in the district have already been ordered to quarantine. On Tuesday, one high school closed its doors until at least Aug. 31. A second high school followed on Wednesday.

If joe and the ho win can we be antifa now?
Children are not at an appreciable risk. The staff under the age of 60 without any co morbidities are also at no appreciable risk. So therefore let the virus do it’s thing.
They aren’t sick. Kids with COVID are almost universally asymptomatic.
Um, like yeah.
Bottom line.....Trump’s fault.
Is that important?
Yes. It would be foolish to shut down the schools over a false positive test. In the long run it may turn out to be a very bad decision to effectively shut down the public school system to avoid a small risk for the students. Or it may turn out to be the cause of a sea change in how children are educated in America.
If students can't attend school in person anymore due to COVID-19 risks then everyone will be homeschooling across our entire nation. There will be no more public schools offering in person instruction. That's a big change for society.
For every 1 kid with a COVID positive test they send home the teacher and everyone else in the class for 2 weeks. The school district has 23 elementary schools, 7 junior high schools and 6 high schools. Total enrollment is over 42,000 students.
Right now 2 of the 6 high schools are shut down and some elementary classes are sent home. The vast majority of students are in class. This county has decided not to do universal remote learning, but to start school with a dance.
“then everyone will be homeschooling across our entire nation.”
Homeschooling with “help”.
Do not negate the contribution of remote learning over the net.
Nothing will stop the smart and curious from learning except the absence of information. The average student will get some value from the structured presentation of information, and additional value from one-on-one sessions with the teacher.
As for the dumb kids, they’re screwed.
But they always were.
The New York Slimes publishes slime...nothing new here.
Not all bad news is contrived.
I agree. There is no Santa Claus.
