If you live in Chicago, you might be thinking about buying a gun to protect yourself, your family, your home, or your business against rioters, looters, and assorted violent criminals. But before you can exercise your Second Amendment rights in Illinois, you need permission from the state police, a process that can take months.
Contrary to a state law that requires approval or denial of an application for a firearm owner's identification (FOID) card within 30 days, Illinois residents often wait two or three times as long. Such delays are plainly unconstitutional, according to a federal lawsuit filed last month by the Goldwater Institute on behalf of four Chicago area residents and two gun rights groups.
The violent unrest that Chicago saw this week is the latest manifestation of a pattern that emerged in late May, when rioters and looters marred protests against police brutality provoked by George Floyd's death in Minneapolis. Meanwhile, homicides in Chicago are up 55 percent as of August 2 compared to the same period last year.
All this alarming criminal activity has been accompanied by a surge in applications for FOID cards, which Illinois residents need to legally possess any sort of firearm. On June 2 alone, the CBS station in Chicago reports, the Illinois State Police (ISP) received nearly 5,000 applications"more than the previous eight days combined."
At the time, the ISP said it was taking an average of 51 days to process FOID applications. Since that is an average, it means many people were waiting even longer.
The lead plaintiff in the Goldwater Institute lawsuit is D'Andre Bradley, a Marine veteran and Illinois National Guard member who applied for a FOID card in late April.

If you have to ask permission, it is not a right.
TWO WEEKS.
It was supposed to be done in 72 hours.
JB Prickster has stripped money away from the State Police to slow down the background check process. FACT.
Wait for “PERMISSION”?!?!?!
There’s the problem.
The overlords will never give permission.
Oregon is doing the same.

If you wait until the crap is flying to try to obtain a firearm, well not to smart.
There is a Cabela’s in Hammond, IN 3 miles from the Illinois line. Whenever I am in the Gun Department, there is a long line of Illinois residents trying to buy a gun in Indiana. The worn out clerks repeat the same line over and over - you cannot buy guns in Indiana, if you live in Illinois.
I don't think so either.
The Chicago establishment is allied with the rioting Antifa and BLM against the common enemy which is the Middle Class. Of course they are withholding permits to the middle class. Would you give guns to your enemy?
Same here in NH. MA residents come here trying to buy guns & ammo and get turned away. No can do b/c of MA gun laws. The majority are surprised and whine/grouse about it. Hey, I suspect theyre all non-voters or dems.
Oregon does not require a FOID card, so it can't possibly be doing the same.
Now if you are thinking of a CHL that is a county-by-county proposition. Take the class, put in your application and wait. Remember this the next election for Sheriff.
So if they strip away more funding we could be left with one overworked 90 year old man who has to handle thousands a week.
If it takes until AOC gets married and has a daughter going to an elite women’s college until they finish granting you a gun permit it’s not a right.
The voters might want to know the shrew Kamela Harris pushed suing gun stores and gun manufacturers as being responsible for the losses in mass shootings and individual killings. She said if I can't get Congress to act right away I will do it as president myself.
” Chicago Residents Wait Months for Permission To Defend Themselves. Despite an alarming increase in crime, Illinois is illegally delaying gun licenses.”
Tyranny of government!
They’ve been doing this for years.....I believe that it was law when I moved to IL that a FOID card had to be issued in 6 weeks if eligible.....Mine took 4 months.
I spoke to a local gun shop that is my go-to, and they said that the state is over whelmed. I don’t think it is purposeful delay; so few people in the state owned firearms compared to those who didn’t, and now the system is overburdened due to the volume. That’s what he told me, and he’s a right -winger.
They also didn’t put a huge amount of resources into pushing through the background checks and FOID system to begin with, so the fact that it is overburdened isn’t a huge surprise.
Isn't that something. I applied in April, been checking every other day. Nothing :(
Just checked again after seeing this thread on FR.
ACTIVE
Illinois State Police - Firearms Bureau
Status - Active
Issued 8/11/2020
Expiration - COVID-19
Unfortunately, that's the first step. Looks like it will take a couple more months. I have to apply for training, range testing and approval etc.
At least I think so, this will be my first.
