There were already some (like the Norsemen) who knew there were some lands to the west.
But the whole civilized world did not know until Columbus made landfall and returned.
That is the point when the continents to the west were uncovered, so to speak.

Who, Who, was the one who DID something about the discovery.
One can find a diamond on the pavement and do NOTHING about it.
But, one can find a diamond and make it into something.
THAT’S the Columbus difference.
Columbus discovered America which was the initiating cause for it to evolve to its present day modern state. Class, if he had not discovered America, would the Aztecs and native Americans on their own built the high rises, technological marvels, planes, autos, railroads or would they have found a better mud compound to decorate their faces before warring with the tribe next door? Let’s see a raise of hands.
When I was in school in the 50s it was acknowledged that the Vikings got to America first. And, of course, the Indians were here for many thousands of years before that. And occasionally there are tantalizing hints that others from the Old World made it to the New.
But what can’t be denied, these earlier ‘discoveries’ did not change the history of the world—and Columbus did. It’s irrelevant that the ‘discovery’ was an accident, Columbus was wrong in is reckoning of the earth’s size, where he was or that the Americas would be ‘discovered’ in 8 years by the Portuguese. There are few humans who have ever lived who have had such a world-wide impact as Columbus and to try to minimize or denigrate his importance to world history is folly.
