Background:
Seth Rich was beaten and shot twice in the back. Nothing was taken. It is possible he was a victim of the knockout mugging and tried to run away which explains the shots in the back. If it was a hit, he would have taken two to the head.

Lot of variables there. Range-to-target & visibility are 2 of them. Rich was killed in the early morning hours. If the shots were fired from beyond a minimal range it might have argued for center-of-mass targeting. Might also explain why he wasn’t robbed.
