That looks like a grain silo. At least that is what grain silo buildings along the Lake Erie shore in Buffalo use to look like. It could also be a cement silo for Portland cement.
IF that is what it is, it could have sustained the blast because they were typically made out of solid concrete.
Is it possible the silo building might have, at least to some extent, helped protect areas behind the building?
