One of President Trump's top medical advisers has warned that the US is entering a new phase in its fight against the coronavirus pandemic.
Deborah Birx told CNN the disease was "extraordinarily widespread" across the country and a greater threat than when the outbreak first began.
She said it was now affecting rural areas as well as big cities.
She said rural communities were not immune and should wear masks and practice social distancing.
The US has recorded more cases and deaths than any other country.
According to a tally by Johns Hopkins University, more than 4.6 million infections and at least 154,834 deaths have been confirmed in America.
Worldwide, nearly 18 million cases and at least 687,072 deaths have been reported.
What did Birx say? "To everybody who lives in a rural area, you are not immune or protected from this virus," said Dr Birx, a leading member of the White House's coronavirus task force.
"This epidemic right now is different and it's more widespread and it's both rural and urban."
She also shared her concerns about people taking holidays in hot spots, citing what she had seen while visiting 14 states during the last three weeks.
"As I travelled around the country, I saw all of America moving," Dr Birx said. "If you have chosen to go on vacation into a hot spot, you really need to come back and protect those with co-morbidities and assume you're infected."
America's outbreak has gained pace over the summer, particularly in southern and western states.
In another development, US House Speaker and leading Democrat Nancy Pelosi attacked Dr Birx, linking her to "disinformation" spread by President Trump.
Dr Birx responded that she always based her decisions on scientific data.

“If you have chosen to go on vacation into a hot spot, you really need to come back and protect those with co-morbidities and assume you’re infected.”
Blatant fearmongering. Unless you have had close consistent contact with someone who is incubating it or has the virus you have little chance of getting the virus. It is not a magic virus.
Avoiding large crowds where people are cheek to jowl makes sense especially if there is a large amount of community spread. But only because it is more difficult to tell if somebody is sick.
But just going about your vacation in a normal manner is not going to make you a vector for the virus. And what happened to “Masks will save us!” Aren’t most hot spots mandating masks. If not state wide at least in various counties and cities?
I would love to know how many among Native tribes in AZ ever had or currently have TB. If I remember correctly TB is rather high in that population.
Just saw this on Fox
President is not happy with Birx and I dont blame him!
Shut this bitch up please.
So what was she doing traveling to 14 states?
New cases are down today in Florida. Less than 5,000.
“..Shut this bitch up please....”
It would be easy enough just by locking up Scarf and Fauxi in GITMO as domestic enemy combatants, traitors and for crimes against humanity for what they did to the economy and lives of the People.
Indeed. So
The US has recorded more cases and deaths than any other country.
is misleading, purposely so.
What did she say about Trump? If shes bashing the admin then why is Crazy Nancy attacking her???
Just saw this on Fox.

Maybe he finally found this out:
Brix has this: Birxs husband, former Clinton advance man Paige Reffe and this:
Because!
...she started her crazy talk, more Covid AFTER Nancy trashed her.
She would rather please Nancy than Trump!
And what happened to Masks will save us!
If social distancing works, why do we need the masks?
If both masks and social distancing work, why is the economy largely shut down?
Something doesn’t add up - and NOT ONE SINGLE REPORTER HAS ASKED THESE SIMPLE QUESTIONS!!!!!!
The fear industry is enjoying a bull market. People can’t get enough of it.
Did she really say you should wear a mask at home?
They’re really pushing the envelope on the absurd.
I see that you, too, put value on the kind of demographic data that political correctness currently denies us. It would be very useful; but it is taboo. More’s the pity.
I may be wrong, but I don’t think the “daily” death totals mean they all died yesterday. In Florida, for example, death totals are tallied daily, however, depending on circumstances, deaths may have occurred anywhere from weeks to months prior, but are logged on a daily basis.
Would be nice to get some real, solid numbers from somewhere.
You'd think "How many died of this disease today?" would be an easy enough data point to tell.
Great post by Diogenesis and followup by you, polymuser. I never thought of it from that angle.
The fact that no one seems to have a problem with all these disease-riddled masks just lying around in our environment or in landfills, and being transported through the waste system who-knows-how by who-knows-who, belies the contention that this is “the most deadly virus in world history”.
They really don’t want the answers.
