Ethiopian television apologizes for announcing filling of Renaissance Dam
Egypt Independent ^ | July 16, 2020 | Edited translation from Al-Masry Al-Youm

Ethiopia's national television network apologized for a statement it published earlier regarding the initial filling of the Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam (GERD) reservoir.

The channel walked back its previous statement that the filling of the dam's reservoir has begun, saying, "We apologize for the misinterpretation of the previous report on our social media page."

The Ethiopian Ministry of Water, Irrigation and Energy announced on Wednesday that negotiations on the Renaissance Dam will continue with Egypt and Sudan.

In a statement, Ethiopian Minister of Water, Irrigation and Energy, Seleshi Bekele, said that negotiations on the dam will continue in the interest of Ethiopia, and that they will be held not only for the benefit of the current generation, but also for the benefit of future generations.

He said that the height of the dam has increased from 525 to 560 feet this year, and that the water level is expected to increase from last year's level of 525 feet to reach 560 feet. He added that the dam will be filled according to the construction of the dam...

Talks on the Renaissance Dam crisis concluded on Monday after eleven days of non-stop negotiations, and the Egyptian Ministry of Irrigation and Water issued a statement announcing the conclusion of the current round of negotiations for the Renaissance Dam, pending an African Union mini-summit.

The Ethiopian Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed has said that his country will start filling the Renaissance Dam reservoir to take advantage of the heavy rainy season, stressing that it will not cause any harm to Egypt.

I hope the Ethiopians didn’t get any help from the Chinese to build this dam.

Suspect that the Chinese are managing the operation of that dam and those resevoirs will fill. The Chinese no doubt are ready to capitalize on new irrigated agricultural lands in Ethiopia to grow grain and cotton.

It's a dirty looking river, that's for sure. :^) There are some YouTube vids of people taking wildwater rafting trips down the Blue Nile in Ethiopia, pretty sure I wouldn't do it.

Looks to be a truly grand reservoir, for sure.

[I hope the Ethiopians didn’t get any help from the Chinese to build this dam.]

The Ethiopians had better have good air defenses around the dam. Because, given the importance of the Nile’s water flow to the country’s agricultural sector, I see the Egyptians doing something like this:

https://www.usaid.gov/egypt/agriculture-and-food-security
[Agriculture is a major component of the Egyptian economy, contributing 14.5 percent of the country’s gross domestic product. The agricultural sector accounts for 28 percent of all jobs, and over 55 percent of employment in Upper Egypt is agriculture-related.]

The water rights to the Colorado River are quite complicated, but somehow Colorado, Utah, Nevada, Arizona, and California despite all of the dams get enough for now.

If we get another 50- or 100-year drought then we could be seeing similar antagonisms here in the States.

Heard somewhere that FettGub also thinks it owns the Colorado River. As do a couple Indian tribes, I think.

The amount of sediment delivered by the annaul flood will take some period of time to fill the reservoir, I wonder how long it will take?.

According to a non-excerpted part of the article, Sudan claims a marked decrease in the flow of the Blue Nile.

Egypt has 100 million people, with 90% (or more) of them relying on the Nile. They won’t exist anymore if the Nile is cut off...so Ethiopia needs to be very, very, careful.
