Netanyahu knows that his long tenure is soon to end. Netanyahu’s life has been defined by the Holocaust. He views Israel as the deliverance of the Jewish people and a guarantor of their safety and existence. He would consider his political career a failure if the mullah’s very real existential threat to Israel and the Jewish people remains intact after he leaves office.
Netanyahu is haunted by the Holocaust. It is a painful exercise but Israeli scholars must analyze not only what was done but how in retrospect it might have been prevented. In 1925 when Hitler and his Nazi thugs were emerging as a significant, virulently anti-Semetic political force, the German Jewish community had considerable wealth and power. In that era political violence and even assasinations were common. Imagine how history and indeed all of Western culture would have been different if the German Jews eliminated Hitler and his thugs. Not only would have the Holocaust been prevented but the devastation and cultural ruination of WW II and the Cold War may have been prevented.
Netanyahu is a student odf history and is tormented by the Holocaust. IMHO he does not want to be like the German Jewish leadership in the 1920s who failed to act definitively when they could have. Netanyahu, like other heroes throughout history will probably not fully complete his task. However he will lay a path and be an inspiration to the Jewish people for a very long time.
I like post 13, Israel knows Iran under the ayatollahs is the main threat to its existence and its present government must act to eliminate that government. Do it now before Iran has the means to wipe Israel off the map.

You left out one additional issue:
100,000 German Jews had fought for the Kaiser in WW1, they all knew how to fire a rifle, and before and even after they instituted the beginnings of gun control in Germany, guns were available.
