Liberals say a lot of things that aren’t true.
The most honest liberal I ever met very rationally explained his support for gun control: he thought he would get angry and irrational at some point and shoot someone, if he had a gun near him. I said, “certainly you don’t think everyone’s like that?” He said, “yes, but they just don’t admit it.”
