I could weep knowing that ol’ Stonewall is no longer looking north up Boulevard. I always thought that was the best of the statues along Monument Avenue because Jackson wasn’t in a heroic pose like the JEB Stuart statue. He was just on his horse, not moving, but on guard and watching, and yes, the statue faced north. That had to be intentional.
I drove down Monument Avenue many many times during the years I lived in Richmond and never got tired of it. It’s not just the statues, it’s a very pretty street full of interesting old houses, with the statues in intersections and roundabouts every few blocks. Doesn’t matter now. It’s a no-go zone. Dead to me forever.

It’s a time I remember oh so well...”

Boulevard has been renamed for that great American hero, Arthur Ashe. Why not rename Monument Avenue for the statue that will probably be the only one remaining on the street, Arthur Ashe. In fact, lets rename the city for that great American hero. Otherwise, the city is a reminder of southern oppression.
