Republican senators are debating whether Juneteenth, a day that commemorates the end of slavery in the United States, should replace Columbus Day on the federal government's list of official holidays.
A bipartisan bill sponsored by Sen. John Cornyn (R-Texas) to make Juneteenth a federal holiday is being held up by an internal Senate GOP squabble.
Sen. Ron Johnson (R-Wis.), an outspoken budget hawk, doesn't want to add another paid holiday to the calendar.
Johnson says if Juneteenth is made a federal holiday, another paid federal holiday should come off the schedule. He's proposing scrapping Columbus Day but is open to eliminating another holiday instead.

So Washington’s Birthday and Lincoln’s Birthday were no good?
Can somebody tell me what the hell is going on in this country???
“Juneteenth” — what BS.
Actually, Mitch has been a great leader . . . on behalf of his left-wing ideologues in the Uniparty, and of course their Chicom benefactors.
Well they made it “President’s Day”, which really was the first shot in the Culture War.
This is exactly why I never give a dime to the GOP. They are all cheese-eating surrender monkeys, quitting before ever beginning to fight. A POX on all of those bastards except for a very few like Nunes, Meadows [too bad he had to leave the house for his new job], Stefanik, Massie, Jordan, Gohmert, Cotton, and Cruz.
Oh barf. Johnson spends with the best of them. He voted against the covid bill because it didn't spend enough.
There are many states which celebrate holidays unique to their experiences. I remember growing up in Massachusetts that we would celebrate Patriots’ Day. The day commemorated the first shots of the Revolutionary War in 1775 and is celebrated in a few surrounding states. The highlight is that the Boston Marathon is always run on this day. But it is generally a Massachusetts thing.
Juneteenth is a Texas thing commemorating the delayed notice 1865 to the slaves held in Texas that they had been declared free by the Emancipation Proclamation two years previously. Ignoring the underlying falsehood that surrounds the holiday, it ONLY applies to the residents of Texas, should they decide to celebrate it.
There is not place in the conscience of America that should treat this as a cause for national celebration. The fact that we no longer celebrate the birthday of the man who caused the events leading up to Juneteenth should be reason enough not to memorialize the day.
Sheesh!
The only two things the GOP leaders respond to: 1) Rioter’s demands; 2) Billionaire donors’ demands.
So unless you’re a billionaire, you’ll just have to become a rioter.
just another worthless holiday regardless. Only useless people get such holidays off. Government workers, bankers, etc.
Some might take exception to that comment since teachers fall within that group. Face it, if the teachers were worth a shit in this country we wouldn’t have so many idiots and insane people trying to tear the country down. Teachers, at this point, are well within the useless group.
But then, so are a lot of parents who have raised such kids.
I pray every day that my children aren’t idiots once they grow past childhood.
The Emancipation Proclamation was a presidential proclamation and executive order issued by President Abraham Lincoln on September 22, 1862. It took effect on January 1 but that date is already taken as a holiday.
Why are they talking about making a national holiday ( Juneteenth ) that is at best a Texas holiday?
“I would also apply that to Navy Ships as well. Its too politicized now.”
The renaming and statue removal issues need to be allowed to cool down before doing anything.
But heck, let’s de-fund police departments immediately.
“Oh barf. Johnson spends with the best of them. He voted against the covid bill because it didn’t spend enough.”
They all want us to stay in Syria, Afghanistan and Iraq forEVER. Cost is no object.
My prediction is that when the dust settles they'll keep Columbus day and add Juneteenth.
Because somebody discovered Trump's rally was on that day.
Yes, and that was a compromise with MLK Day to not add an extra holiday to the calendar.
It inspired murder fantasies like Public Enemy’s “By The Time I Get To Arizona”, where the lyrics insisted on putting then-AZ governor Evan Meacham to death for opposing the holiday in honor of MLK . . . kinda ran contrary to MLK’s message, perhaps?
Lets officially open that wound every year. What could go wrong?
Yep - if they accept this, next thing is they’ll want Kwanzaa as a national holiday.
I remember also the NFL pulled the Super Bowl from Arizona because they hadn’t passed it.
The USS John McCain tells me everything I wish I never knew
Repubs are feckless in so many ways. Grow a pair, you castratos.
