Central Florida Coronavirus hospitalizations rising; Florida reaches 100,000 positive Covid-19 cases

Hospitalizations from COVID-19 are spiking in Central Florida as the number of positive cases have reached record highs in recent days, less than a month after the state entered its second phase of reopening.

As of Monday, 115 patients with COVID-19 were being treated at Orange County hospitals, according to information shared by Orange County health department officials.

That’s 51 more cases than the week before and 85 more than the week of May 17.

Health systems told the county “their numbers were higher than ever before,” said Dr. Raul Pino, health officer at the Florida Department of Health in Orange County, in an email on Monday.

Seminole County is also seeing more hospitalized coronavirus patients. There are currently 46 patients with COVID-19 in the county’s hospitals.

“Three weeks ago we had an average of 3-4 per day,” said Alan Harris, chief administrator of Seminole County Office of Emergency Management in an email. “This is an increase for certain.”

Harris said three COVID-19 patients are currently in the ICU; in Orange, there are 20 patients in the ICU, a number that has stayed relatively flat over the past month.

In a shift from the beginning of the pandemic, when most of the hospitalized patients were in their 70s and 80s, patients now are in their 40s and 50s, Pino said. Florida Medical Association: ‘Florida’s doctors want you to wear a mask'

As Florida on Monday passed 100,000 positive coronavirus cases, the number of COVID-19 hospitalizations are important because they indicate the spread and severity of disease and can signal whether local hospitals are at risk of getting overwhelmed.

Local hospitals say that they still have enough capacity, and they’ve learned how to better manage COVID-19 patients.

Lies mixed with a little truth. Like dog poop mixed with chocolate frosting. I won’t believe any of this, after what they did to us. Death rate is tiny. No more lockdowns.

let doctors I know think masks are ineffective. Medical associations are usually a couple of left wing loons who pretend to speak for all physicians. Think AMA

“ Anecdotal, but what I am seeing is a lot of young people are now catching it....young = between the ages of 20 to 30.”

True- I know of four in this age group who currently have it.

“Testing is wayyyy up and deaths, the important number, are wayyyy down.”

Exactly right. However the media will not tell that side of the story.

Beware the “per capita” crowd that might accuse you of having an agenda.

Masks do nothing and lockdowns serve no purpose..

As long as system is in no risk of being overloaded other than protecting the most vulnerable this should be allowed to run its course

How many are New York/City and New Jersey imports? Take them away as “Typhoid Marys” and the figures should look at lot different, and better.

How can this be? "The Experts" assured everyone that by wearing a daylong snot rag and practicing anti-social distancing (a 12-foot diameter on-the-go "safe space") we will be invulnerable!

I suppose that as with all other viral infections, in the absence of a vaccine this flu will simply run its course. All we can do is lengthen the time it takes it to do ... and we continue to stretch this damn thing out by "hiding" from the germs, then ultimately contracting the flu (in one sense a good thing as we'll develop antibodies naturally and most of us likely won't get very sick or even not sick at all) when we eventually overcome our increasingly irrational fear, venture outside around other people and one day get back to living our lives as grownups.

I have friends who have lived in the villages many years. 5 years ago, they were telling me about the STD ‘’pandemic’’. It had been big for a good while. Viagra and lube .... but few condoms ... were the big sellers at the local pharmacies.

The hospitalizations are still low.

And anyone in the hospital who tests positive—or even they say is likely to have the virus—not only counts as a hospitalization, but is also something of a financial bonanza for the hospital.

In Arizona, half of the new cases are people in their 20s & 30s, which may be why cases are increasing very rapidly while deaths continue down. 11% of new cases are below 20. And 80% of new cases involve no chronic medical conditions.
