Following the orders of Governor Roy Cooper, work crews on Saturday removed two Confederate monuments outside the state capitol in Raleigh, the morning after protesters toppled two nearby statues.
Crews will also remove the remainder of the obelisk which held the two Confederate statues until they were pulled down Friday night.
Newsoutlets report that crews were removing one statue dedicated to the women of the Confederacy, and another placed by the United Daughters of the Confederacy honoring Henry Wyatt, who is believed to have been the first North Carolinian killed in battle in the Civil War.
The Wyatt monument was dedicated in 1912 and the womens monument had been in-place since 1914, according to the North Carolina Department of Cultural Resources.
It was initially not clear who ordered the removals of the monuments, but Cooper claimed responsibility in a statement released Saturday afternoon.
I have ordered the Confederate monuments on the Capitol grounds be moved to protect public safety, Cooper said. I am concerned about the dangerous efforts to pull down and carry off large, heavy statues and the strong potential for violent clashes at the site. If the legislature had repealed their 2015 law that puts up legal roadblocks to removal, we could have avoided the dangerous incidents of (Friday) night.
"Monuments to white supremacy dont belong in places of allegiance, and its past time that these painful memorials be moved in a legal, safe way.

Roy Cooper is an evil little man.
Does anyone know what happens to these monuments after removal?
Could they theoretically be relocated to a private museum?
Evil little man describes the typical liberal male on the inside.
I think they should auction them off; the proceeds could offset the cost of removing them.
Cooper is a worthless POS....
I wonder if these statues can be moved to private property. Can they be adopted by private citizens and placed on private property.
They can vote the liberal bastard out in Nov.
In the post-Helms era, people in NC are so easily tricked by charlatans. Some Republicans in NC sit on their fannies to allow such men to be elected.
North Carolina governors can only served for one term.
F U ROY COOPER!
Governors of North Carolina. After the current state constitution was ratified in 1971, North Carolina Governors are limited to two consecutive four-year terms in office; they had previously been limited to one four-year term from 1835 through 1971.
Not true. Used to be but was changed in 1971.
This is government we are speaking of. You would be lucky to collect the cost of running the auction.
There is a lamp post with your name on it Roy.
I did not know that. Most unfortunate.
Yep.
NC resident here. Been here almost all my life. Cooper is a dirtbag.

When will every building, street named after Robert Byrd be changed....
Not true, Cooper is running against Dan Forest who is the current Lt. Governor, a republican.
Does that apply to landmarks named after Woodrow Wilson and Robert Byrd???
