Nobody is denying that Trump can fire the U.S. attorney. But not telling the man that he resigned before you released a press release saying that he did is probably always going to lead to the situation they have now.

I seem to remember in detail the first week in office Clinton fired THEM ALL and replaced them with people beholding to, or in actual fact, FOB (Friends of Bill)

United States v. Solomon, 216 F. Supp. 835, 843 (S.D.N.Y. 1963)
[T]he President may, at any time, remove the judicially appointed United States Attorney, pursuant to 28 U.S.C. § 504. The language of subsection (b), "[e]ach United States attorney shall be subject to removal by the President * * *," clearly authorizes the executive to remove any United States Attorney, regardless of the nature of his appointment.
