Donald Trump has long had two cherished American institutions standing beside him as he railed against athletes taking a knee during the national anthem: NASCAR and the NFL.
This week, they both started to walk away.
Bending to the cultural moment, NASCAR and the NFL in recent days reversed course on their approach to athletes protesting racial injustice. NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell said he had been wrong for not listening to protesting players earlier and encouraged all to speak out and peacefully protest. Meanwhile, NASCAR relaxed rules barring kneeling during the national anthem and banned Confederate flags from its events. Within days, a NASCAR driver was circling a track in a race car emblazoned with #BlackLivesMatter and a NASCAR official was taking a knee during pre-race ceremonies.
The moves came in response to the protests that have erupted across the country in response to the killing of George Floyd, a 46-year-old black man who died at the hands of the Minneapolis police. And they reflected shifting cultural attitudes polls show an increasing percentage of the population view racism as a big problem in the country and the protests as a justified response.
Yet Trump stood his ground. He attacked Goodell, wondering whether the commissioner was telling players that it would now be O.K. for the players to KNEEL, or not to stand, for the national anthem, thereby disrespecting our Country & our Flag? And he separately lashed out about a blossoming discussion about renaming military bases named after Confederate leaders.
The changing tenor from the two leagues could be pivotal for Trump, though. The president has long leaned on the front offices of each organization as he has publicly attacked athletes who took a knee during the national anthem, and privately pressured some team owners to change anthem rules.

NFL may be more important to some than God? No matter what they do people keep supporting them.
I doubt nascar fans chose racing over this country’s future. so No trump didnt lose 2 pivital allies. NASCAR just lost 40 million fans. And the NFL was already infected, it just lost another 20 million ‘ almost had us back “ fans.
They love Black Money, that’s the bottom line.
They want Reparations, because they know the Blacks will give the money right back to them.
NFL was never his ally.
And even I have to turn my back on them now.
Don't forget the width="420" in the IMG src.
Have a great day.
I had a stroke over six years ago and I have trouble kneeling. I look ridiculous both kneeling and getting up. Even so, I have to agree totally with the fellow who said that he only kneels to G-d.
“Really excellent chick fights.”
I’d rather watch High School boys soccer.
Right? I believe it is nascar and the nfl who have lost here
People think it can't happen, but just look at the history of pro boxing and TV.
For a period in the 50s-60s, pro boxing was the TV sports king.
When the fans get turned off, for whatever reason, or if you intentionally piss down their leg and tell them it's raining, and they leave, you gotta big problem.
Don’t get me started about a society that gets off on watching girls fight.
Now for the reality check!
RE: Trump loses 2 pivotal allies in his anti-kneeling crusade: NASCAR and the NFL
I admit I was disappointed with NASCAR. But I’ve never considered the NFL a conservative ally, Neither the NBA when they caved to the Chicoms. And certainly NOT Women’s soccer.
Yep i was gonna post same thing. Brother who was a diehard nascar car fan said he has watched his last race. Trump didn’t lose 2 allies, he gained millions of allies of ex football and race fans
NFL and NASCAR leadership were never Trump allies, nor allies with most of their viewers.
Neither were leaders of most pro and collegiate and H.S. ports.
Time for some actual white discrimination. Let ‘em all see what that actually looks like.
“NASCAR dances to the tune of its corporate sponsors.”
No question about that; and I can understand someone working for wages - with a family and a mortgage - not spitting in the face of their boss. I’ve been there.
What I don’t understand is how an industry full of millionaires and billionaires doesn’t have at least one team owner that says it is wrong to disrespect the American flag.
Not one!
Two weeks ago few knew how deep the rot was. We knew it was bad, but didn’t expect a slight breeze to collapse the entire system to its knees in such a spectacular fashion.
Sarcasm tag was implicit.
Just shows how stupid Yahoo is
Unnecessary. These companies could have easily used Clinton-style triangulation to denounce racism while also denouncing violence as did Martin Luther King. Instead they caved to a violent mob.
