Donald Trump has long had two cherished American institutions standing beside him as he railed against athletes taking a knee during the national anthem: NASCAR and the NFL.
This week, they both started to walk away.
Bending to the cultural moment, NASCAR and the NFL in recent days reversed course on their approach to athletes protesting racial injustice. NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell said he had been wrong for not listening to protesting players earlier and encouraged all to speak out and peacefully protest. Meanwhile, NASCAR relaxed rules barring kneeling during the national anthem and banned Confederate flags from its events. Within days, a NASCAR driver was circling a track in a race car emblazoned with #BlackLivesMatter and a NASCAR official was taking a knee during pre-race ceremonies.
The moves came in response to the protests that have erupted across the country in response to the killing of George Floyd, a 46-year-old black man who died at the hands of the Minneapolis police. And they reflected shifting cultural attitudes polls show an increasing percentage of the population view racism as a big problem in the country and the protests as a justified response.
Yet Trump stood his ground. He attacked Goodell, wondering whether the commissioner was telling players that it would now be O.K. for the players to KNEEL, or not to stand, for the national anthem, thereby disrespecting our Country & our Flag? And he separately lashed out about a blossoming discussion about renaming military bases named after Confederate leaders.
The changing tenor from the two leagues could be pivotal for Trump, though. The president has long leaned on the front offices of each organization as he has publicly attacked athletes who took a knee during the national anthem, and privately pressured some team owners to change anthem rules.

Yes, corporations are lazy and disloyal for selling America out to China. It’s short term profits while the country goes down the tube.
And I think lack of God in our secular age has a lot to do with it too. Without God there is:
1) No ultimate moral source that you will have to account to one day. So get away with as much as you can.
2) No use planing for the future because you’ll be dead and then who cares? Why have kids and family to burden you down with responsibilities — responsibilities like making a decent country for them to live in? Live for the moment because tomorrow you die.
3) Without God there is just YOU. You fall back on your desires, will and ego. There is no loyalty to anyone except YOU. Your tawdry life becomes meaningless, but you still cling on to yourself.
I’m going to vote that we drop all the virtue-signaling athletes and sports: football, basketball, etc. Let’s instead adopt Hurling as a national pastime.
I’ve had enough of this anti-American sh**. Screw every sport that does this crapola. There are many other things to do rather than support this seditious behavior.
Or Gaelic Football, which is really a cool game.
Also, I started getting into Cricket. See a bunch of kids in my neighborhood playing it, since they come from India.
“Anti-kneeling campaign.”
Because apparently kneeling is the new normal.
Absolutely!
As a Vietnam vet, I say God bless you and your father. I wish I had an answer to your question but sadly I dont have one. Contrary to what the knee benders say, taking a knee while the National Anthem is being played is disrespectful. Theyve changed their narrative this go around for sure. We shall see how it plays out. One thing I do know for sure is Im out of sports.
Trump has not lost the fans.
Those that run the nfl and nascar are no big deal.
They kneel...we STAND.
With Trump.
“This week, they both started to walk away.”
Bye, and we won’t absorb your attempted hyper-empathy implants.
NFL and NASCAR are entertainment. How are they “pivotal allies”?
Politico and Yahoo, as usual, have it backwards. The real losers will be the NFL and NASCAR. Bet on it.

NASCAR not just stepped into it but fell face first. They just lost their fan base.
Its the other way around actually
And I,like at least some (if not many) Freepers, can afford high end German cars, can afford to fly Emirates Airlines, can afford a Mediterranean cruise and can afford a Rolex watch (at least the cheaper ones).
When the NFL season starts I plan to contact the advertisers of those games and make it clear that I've stopped watching...permanently.And then I'll contact NFL Merchandise and tell them I've stopped buying jerseys, etc.
This has nothing to do with Trump. NASCAR and the NFL can expect to lose their fan base over this. Might as well NASCEXT before they seat the first tranny driver
“can afford to fly Emirates Airlines”
Who maintains their aircraft?
