This is a good thing. But, it is dangerous for the officers. But as a armed citizen if someone were to break into my house unannounced, I would shoot them.
In my state, you would have every right to do so. The cops in my county know that if they go poking around a rural home at night unannounced, they are liable to be shot. They usually call first. Or, if at night, they will at least pull up in plain sight in the driveway with their lights on and engine running and honk once.
