Electric car maker Tesla Inc (TSLA.O) plans to introduce a new low-cost, long-life battery in its Model 3 sedan in China later this year or early next that it expects will bring the cost of electric vehicles in line with gasoline models, and allow EV batteries to have second and third lives in the electric power grid.
For months, Tesla Chief Executive Elon Musk has been teasing investors, and rivals, with promises to reveal significant advances in battery technology during a Battery Day in late May.
New, low-cost batteries designed to last for a million miles of use and enable electric Teslas to sell profitably for the same price or less than a gasoline vehicle are just part of Musks agenda, people familiar with the plans told Reuters.

Eventually, improved versions of the battery, with greater energy density and storage capacity and even lower cost, will be introduced in additional Tesla vehicles in other markets, including North America, the sources said.
Teslas plan to launch the new battery first in China and its broader strategy to reposition the company have not previously been reported. Tesla declined to comment.
Teslas new batteries will rely on innovations such as low-cobalt and cobalt-free battery chemistries, and the use of chemical additives, materials and coatings that will reduce internal stress and enable batteries to store more energy for longer periods, sources said.

A million miles? Okay, NOW Musk has my attention. If he can pull that off, the world’s going to be an interesting place.
Squirrel!
Wait and see...that is a big tech leap....
Thanks yesthatjallen. BTW, all, by million miles is meant, before replacement, not a million miles per charge. :^)
But can he get the electric motor to last over 100,000 miles?
Every month we get another miracle battery story.
The Inventor episode of Barney Miller comes to mind.
A guy invents a battery that Arthur Dietrich says can’t exist.
How are they for thermal runaway, higher energy density tends to increase that risk. If Musk can pull this off with a battery pack that is as safe as that in a Toyota hybrid, Ill be very impressed and it will change the world.
Will be he id a work in electric razor, electric toothbrushes, lawn mowers, weedwhackers, adult sex toys?
Does this mean no more flaming Teslas? Even if it is still a long charge time, how many miles until a recharge is needed and will it do better in cold weather areas?
Battery tech is exciting. So are leds.
As someone who grew up thinking flashlights were a corroded chrome tube holding leaking dead ray-o-vacs...
But is Musk actually designing the battery technology? Does Tesla have the patent on these designs? I don’t follow too closely but last I remember he was making batteries in concert with some major industrial players alongside him; using their tech to fit his specs.
What I do know is that Tesla stock price closed at an all time high today. On news that it sold 11,000 cars to China last month. I dunno what to say. Doesn’t Ford sell that many cars in a day?
everyone knows that secret batteries are the BEST!
weedwhackers, adult sex toys?
= = =
Do NOT mix these together.
'Extraordinary claims require extraordinary proof'
I agree but I'm willing to let them prove their claims.
We'll see what independent testing shows.
Note he is giving this new battery technology to China first?
I believe the battery story more than any chance of deep state indictments coming.
“But can he get the electric motor to last over 100,000 miles?”
Are you serous? Electric motors are MUCH more reliable.
My pool pump is exposed to the elements and is going on 16 years for about 6 hours a day.
Tesla. has done one million mile tests on the entire drive train with no significant wear.
“Does this mean no more flaming Teslas? “
ICE cars are much more likely to flame.
