I noticed a difference, even on Fox News, the second night (that we had threads)....they only showed clips of either previous riots/protests, or peaceful corners of NYC, etc.

I think the race of the horse owner is a factor here, as you have pointed out. Horses are very deeply symbolic still even in our (largely) urbanized, post-agrarian society. A man on horseback is a powerful image.
So, they want to take the white man’s horse, or horses.
Symbolism is a big deal to these people.

I went to be with my nephew in the Bywater exactly 6 months after Katrina went down and the city was still only about 1/3 repopulated.I was there for 10 days helping him work on his double shotgun house (which was not really damaged by the storm but due for work anyway.) He had left to go on the road with his band 2 days before Katrina hit, and was one of the first to return and be allowed back in months later. All the time I was there, and we went all over the city, there was virtually NO police presence anywhere. I saw exactly TWO cop cars parked in the parking lots of convenience stores with the cops inside reading magazines.
I thought Baltimore had been pretty peaceful compared with what happened a few years ago when some guy was killed in police custody. A lot of parents telling their kids to stay home and out of trouble.
