I mostly agree with you, except that one thing from this that I really did like was: “require police to report and intervene any time they see an unauthorized use of force by another officer.” Now, I’m not naive enough to think rookie officers are actually going to report the misconduct of veterans, but I’ve seen plenty of examples caught on video recently of officers holding other officers back when they went too far, and I think that’s important. If a cop is violating policy, using excessive force, or doing something unnecessarily dangerous to human life, the only people who can stop that are other police officers. If a civilian were to try and intervene, even if they were absolutely right to do so in that moment, a long list of charges against them for their troubles would be the best case scenario. Only cops can stop other cops who lose control or misjudge a situation. Officers need to be trained to do so and empowered by policy to do so. That’ll save a lot more lives than anything else being discussed.
i’ve got a list of things I support in theory that would probably not look too much different than part of the list from the NAACP.
We on the right, and of course libertarians, have long railed against police excess. We also believe police are essential, and support them when they do the right thing even if it has a bad outcome, but we’ve opposed police unions, no-knock warrants, a lot of libertarians are against most of the drug war.
I oppose no-knock, and no-announce, entry into houses, especially at night. I think all officers doing a home entry should be required to be in uniform, and to announce before entering, and I don’t care that this means that drugs might get flushed, or a suspect might get off a shot at an officer.
Too many innocent people are getting shot because they don’t KNOW it is cops, and are trying to defend themselves.
I’m also supporting citizen review panels, and setting up better protections for officers turning in other officers. The best way to make a community feel safer is to give them ample opportunity to see bad cops going away.
Note that even with the protests, 95% of the community isn’t out their protesting. They are in their homes scared, and hoping police will keep them safe. There is not universal hatred of police in black communities (just in woke white liberal facebook feeds).
