How long has it been since DC had a Mayor who wasn’t an incompetent lunatic.
As PDJT has so often said "These people are sick!"
Brings to mind John Mitchell (Nixon’s AG). When they asked him when DC would become a state, he told them: “When they stop running it like the Amos ‘n’ Andy Taxicab Company”.
I’m not sure if DC has ever had a competent mayor under the existing “home rule charter”, which went into effect circa 1974. When I moved here to attend The George Washington University in 1976, the mayor was Walter Washington, an older man who was not a flamer like Marion Barry. Even he was incompetent, as the municipal water/sewer utility could never send bills to the correct addresses. Things started to go downhill from there when Barry narrowly won a 3-way primary in 1978. It has been a gong show since, including Sharon Pratt Dixon (later S.P. Kelly) (she of the gigantic eyeglasses), Anthony Williams, Adrian Fenty, Vincent Gray and Muriel “Bow Wow” Bowser.
Fenty tried to improve the DC public schools, and ran afoul of the teachers’ union. He seemed like a jerk with an attitude, but he was the only one of these people who tried to do anything to improve the municipal government in DC.
When Barry was the mayor, the DC municipal government (separate and apart from the federal government) had over 33,000 employees, or about 5% of the population. Barry literally bought off anyone who threatened his position as “mayor for life” (until, of course, Hazel “Rasheeda” Moore lured him to room 727 at the Vista Hotel near Thomas Circle for some cognac and crack in front of the FBI’s candid cameras). As the FBI led him away in handcuffs, Marion was heard to say “G** D*** B***h Set Me Up”.
