The Lancet has issued an "expression of concern" over a large-scale study of hydroxychloroquine and chloroquine it published that led to the World Health Organization suspending clinical trials of the anti-viral drugs as a potential treatment for COVID-19.
In a statement, the medical journal acknowledged "important" questions over the research, after dozens of scientists issued an open letter last week raising concerns about its methodology and transparency around the data, which was provided by the firm Surgisphere.
"Although an independent audit of the provenance and validity of the data has been commissioned by the authors not affiliated with Surgisphere and is ongoing, with results expected very shortly, we are issuing an Expression of Concern to alert readers to the fact that serious scientific questions have been brought to our attention," The Lancet said Tuesday.
While an expression of concern is not as severe as a journal withdrawing a published study, it signifies that the research is potentially problematic.
The observational study looked at records for 96,000 patients and concluded that treatment with hydroxychloroquine, which is normally used to treat arthritis, and chloroquine, an anti-malarial, showed no benefit and even increased the likelihood of patients dying in hospital.
Its publication last month triggered the WHO to announce it was pausing clinical trials of the drugs.
France was among the countries to also halt COVID-19 treatment with hydroxychloroquine.
It has whipped up fresh controversy over hydroxychloroquine, which has been endorsed by public figures including US President Donald Trump despite concerns over its side effects and a lack of evidence that it is effective.

This was a plainly bad study. With further investigation, probably outright fraudulent.
When I worked in Nigeria I took HCQ for years as did all the other guys working there. We had no problems and did not get malaria nor drop dead. I was a geologist then and a clinical pharmacist today.
This drug is incredible safe with a clinical record of millions of patients. If one has a heart arrhythmia perhaps it should not be used but not necessarily not. This is decision of ones doctor. If one has as a G6PD Deficiency one should not take this drug. It might cause a fatal condition. This G6PD deficiency is rare but real. It is easily detected by blood work.
According to The Guardian, the company’s LinkedIn page currently lists only three employees. The CEO, who is listed as an author of the blockbuster Lancet and NJEM studies, reportedly has three malpractice suits and had earlier launched a crowdfunding project to produce a “human augmentation device” that would “help you achieve what you never thought was possible”. He was assisted by a sci-fi fantasy fiction writer, and an adult content model.
This company supposedly consolidated data from 671 hospitals on six continents upon which The Lancet and NEJM articles were based, even though its web presence seemed inadequate to collect the data from reporting institutions.
Evidently there are still real journalists in Australia who found discrepancies in the Australian data. Following up, they found that the hospitals that supposedly supplied Australian data had never communicated with the company. They were also puzzled regarding how the company could collect detailed data in countries that had patient privacy regulations.
Maybe a doctor with the help of a sci-fi author and an adult content model could put together a reliable database of treatments and clinical outcomes of 96,032 COVID-19 patients from 671 hospitals. Maybe, but I sure wouldn’t count on it without a pretty extensive audit.
Using Occam’s Razor, I can’t see how this study could be anything other than scientific fraud. It is astonishing to me that it would be published in a prestigious journal unless the journal’s editorial staff were more interested in politics than in science. BTW, these articles were “peer reviewed”. I imagine that one of the criteria to be a “peer” was a confirmed diagnosis of TDS.
I’ve taken it twice for travel in Africa. No problem. Before I traveled there I consulted with a specialist in tropical diseases. Based solely upon information my health history form he prescribed HCQ for prevention of malaria.
Every time I hear people in media speak of “side effects” I know by experience that they are spouting BS.
I don’t know whether HCQ is effective against COVID-19 (with zinc or a macrolide). But I do know that its side effects in the dosages and duration used for treatment of COVID-19 are not significant with a few readily detectable exceptions. I am in Trump’s camp on this: if I were to develop symptoms, what would I have to lose by taking HCQ+.
The study done by Lancet was an economic study. The entire study was below par in funding, ergo, the full parameter of the study was never complete.

Lancet published it with no review whatsoever.

There was a letter signed by 120 scientists and doctors highlighting numerous flaws in the authors’ data. I’ve read it and if IIRC lack of peer review was mentioned.

Well, if the article was not peer reviewed by OBJECTIVE peers, how the heck did it get published in the Lancet, and influence WHO and governments in such countries as France?
Lancet reported yesterday they are gonna investigate.
