The veteran Minneapolis police officer charged in the death of a man in his custody had 18 previous complaints of misconduct against him, according to news reports.

Only two of the old complaints against Derek Chauvin resulted in disciplinary actions, according to The Wall Street Journal.

Chauvin, 44, who is seen with a knee on a handcuffed and prostrate George Floyd’s neck in a video recording, was arrested and charged Friday in Floyd’s death after three days of unrest in Minneapolis.

Three of the complaints against Chauvin involved police-involved shootings, none of which resulted in discipline during his 19-year career, Fox News reported.

The Daily Signal sought comment Friday evening from Minneapolis lawyer Thomas Kelly, identified by The Wall Street Journal as representing Chauvin. Kelly had not responded as of publication.

Hennepin County Attorney Mike Freeman announced Friday that the county had arrested and charged Chauvin with third-degree murder and manslaughter in the death Monday evening of Floyd, 46.

The video shows Chauvin pressing a knee into Floyd’s neck after the handcuffed man begs him to stop, says he can’t breathe, and eventually appears to lose consciousness. The incident is racially charged because Chauvin is white and Floyd was black.

President Donald Trump said Friday that he had spoken to members of Floyd’s family, and that the Justice Department is investigating his death.

“I’ve asked that the Department of Justice expedite the federal investigation into his death and it immediately. Do it as quickly as absolutely possible,” Trump said, adding:

Nineteen complaints against Derek Chauvin? This guy was an implosion waiting to happen. The lefties running the Minneapolis PD have some explaining to do. With that many complaints how the hell was that officer not taken off the streets long ago?

President Trump gets that many complaints of misconduct everyday before breakfast.

The results of the autopsy will make or break this case; which is why Rev. Crump is autopsy-shopping right now.

I hate being the sh*t poster but can’t anyone make complaints and what is the average of a 20 year veteran? I do know most are complete BS as per government statistic. Obviously this guy was not a model cop and one true profound complaint should remove him from public service.

I was thinking the same thing. Apparently he was involved in the shooting of a man named Reyes a few years ago but he was only one of three officers involved. Anyone can make a complaint-I want to see what the complaints were for.

Not sure what all duties this cop performed but an average of only one complaint a year in a major city seems like it might be a pretty light number.
Lots of complaints are certain to be bogus, petty revenge for whatever reason.

The headline is dramatic at first glance, but carries little or no real information content.
WHAT were the complaints, how credible were they, was there a pattern, why was little or no punitive action taken?

That said, I’ve filed a genuine complaint a time or two, VERY hard to get taken seriously.
Particularly when cops do the “Blue Line” bit to commit perjury in unison.
And nearly all judges are more interested in protecting the cops and county treasury than the citizens, so a truly “fair” hearing is nearly impossible.
And yes that includes we “White” folk.

“Good cops” claim to get frustrated when We The People lose respect for them.
Here’s a HINT, if you think you are a good cop you had best be ready to testify against the bad ones!
If you cannot do that, you are NOT a good cop.
Good cops know who the rotten apples are, they need to speak up sooner rather than later. Might just be their house that burns.

> Is the police union complicit? <

No. A union (any union) can be thought of as something like a law firm. It’s the union’s job is to protect the membership. Period. You wouldn’t blame a defense lawyer for doing his job. Neither should you blame a union official.

It’s the job of management to discipline workers, and sort out the bad apples. Folks who blame the union should instead be blaming weak management.

However, there is a fly in the ointment. It should be a level playing field. But it’s not. Legislators have made it too hard to fire someone for cause.

YES I told a relative that it is hard to fired a bad teacher let alone a bad cop due to the unions. I feel that is the pink elephant that many do not want to bring up.

"President Trump gets that many complaints of misconduct everyday before breakfast."

First thing that came to my mind as well.

Just because someone files a complaint, doesn't equal wrongdoing...cause if that were taken as fact, as you succinctly pointed out, our President would be in the wrong thousands of times by now.

Cruz, the Parkland killer, also had numerous complaints about his behavior.

So we can fry the symptomatic actors, but shouldn’t the policy makers also suffer?

Yeah, I know — too boring.

Where is the outrage when 50+ blacks are shot to death each weekend in Chicago? Where’s Jesse Jackson & Al Sharpton? They and other leftist scum like them are nowhere to be found because it’s not politically expedient for them. They don’t care about black-on-black crime.

The rioting and looting is both criminal and stupid - and those involved need rubber bullets, teargas, jailtime, fines, and felonies permanently etched on their records.

Even if a toxicology report shows George Floyd had a massive drug overdose in his system it doesn’t matter at this point.

It’s the same as punching an 80 year old woman in the stomach who then has a heart attack and dies. You WILL be charged with murder.

George Floyd was a scumbag and criminal who last got out of prison in 2014, but he didn’t deserve to die like this.

As a US Army Infantryman who has fought overseas, I know the difference and how to use lethal and non-lethal force to subdue people.

That foolish cop went WAY over the line. He used excessive LETHAL FORCE for too LONG - and continued after the man had passed out. It’s like me continuing a rear naked or cross collar choke on someone for another 3-4 minutes after they have passed out - they are now dead.

...George Floyd had a massive drug overdose in his system...

Hence, after putting on the handcuffs three officers decided to pin George to the ground. Perhaps to stop George from thrashing around and hurting himself??

Hence, Chavin charged with murder in 3rd degree

Yes anyone can make complaints and in a high crime area you’re probly arresting dozens of people every week so you’re constantly involved with criminal elements. These are complaints not charges not disciplinary actions not suspensions but complaints in a 20 year career.
