WASHINGTON -- Threatening to shut down Twitter for flagging false content. Claiming he can override governors who dare to keep churches closed to congregants. Asserting the absolute authority to force states to reopen, even when local leaders say its too soon.
As he battles the coronavirus pandemic, President Donald Trump has been claiming extraordinarily sweeping powers that legal scholars say the president simply doesnt have. And he has repeatedly refusing to spell out the legal basis for those powers.
Its not that the president doest have a remarkable amount of power to respond to a public health crisis. Its that these are not the powers he has, said Stephen Vladeck, a University of Texas School of Law professor who specializes in constitutional and national security law.
Asked Tuesday what authority he had to enforce such a mandate, Trump was cagey.
I can absolutely do it if I want to, he said. We have many different ways where I can override them and if I have to, Ill do that.
Trump is now on a tear against Twitter after the social media platform, which he uses to speak directly to his more than 80 million followers, slapped fact-check alerts on two of his tweets claiming that mail-in voting is fraudulent.
For Rutgers University media professor John Pavlik, who studies online misinformation, Trump is simply trying to fire up his political base.
For Trump, he said, this is about politics.

Yeah, I definitely believe Trump is setting them up here! Isn’t it interesting that our Fake News is all for states rights when Dem Govs are destroying their state’s economy to hurt Trump! 10th Amendment Provisions do not give tyrannical Govs the power to destroy their states!
So the Lefties have now embraced states’ rights?
Two words, Jilly. “Jenny Craig.”
Five more words, Jilly. “Stop being a lying Stalinist.”
Not to be nasty, but she has such a pretty, delicate name.
She is not representative of that name...as soooo many Women of the Left.
Guess I am just shallow.
He just watched Obama - and learned from his example. :)
“Free exercise of religion” is a civil right enumerated in the First Amendment. Are they saying Trump has no power to order action against any who commit civil rights violations?
Trump’s order to open churches last weekend, might not have had legal authority to do so, but did bring out where certain governors and mayors stand on The Church. Great ad ammo for any Republican running for office in a blue state.
