Bad trends continue. 3,800 new cases among 25K tests with a positive % of 13.5%. 53 deaths is a new Saturday high and the 7-day avg up to 47. This is a new high that looks to grow. New hospitalizations continue to increase, while current appear to have plateaued.

10 crew test positive for COVID-19 on first Carnival Corp. ships scheduled to cruise
Today, 07:48 PM
BY TAYLOR DOLVEN
JULY 24, 2020 06:13 PM , UPDATED JULY 25, 2020 07:56 AM
Ten crew members on German-based ships slated to begin cruises in August have tested positive for COVID-19.
The AIDA-brand cruise ships are owned by Miami-based Carnival Corporation.
The crew members had recently flown to Germany from their home countries in Asia to begin working on the ships, local media reported. After testing negative in their home countries, they then tested negative again in Germany. Shortly after boarding the ships, docked in Rostock, Germany, they tested positive.
Carnival Corp. spokesperson Roger Frizzell said the company does not expect the findings will delay its launch of cruises from Germany on Aug. 5.

Mystery seeds delivered to Louisiana resident
July 24, 2020 Baton Rouge, La. (July 24, 2020) Today, the Louisiana Department of Agriculture and Forestry (LDAF) was notified that a resident in St. Rose, La. received an unsolicited package of seeds originating from China.
At this time, recent reports indicate that unsolicited packages of seeds have been received by people in Utah, Virginia, Washington and the United Kingdom.
Right now, we are uncertain what types of seeds are in the package. Out of caution, we are urging anyone who receives a package that was not ordered by the recipient, to please call the LDAF immediately, said Commissioner of Agriculture and Forestry Mike Strain, D.V.M. We need to identify the seeds to ensure they do not pose a risk to Louisianas agricultural industry or the environment.
The number to call is 225-925-4733. LDAF inspectors will collect the seeds and test them for positive identification.

Nat Microbiol . LY6E impairs coronavirus fusion and confers immune control of viral disease

Abstract
Zoonotic coronaviruses (CoVs) are substantial threats to global health, as exemplified by the emergence of two severe acute respiratory syndrome CoVs (SARS-CoV and SARS-CoV-2) and Middle East respiratory syndrome CoV (MERS-CoV) within two decades1-3. Host immune responses to CoVs are complex and regulated in part through antiviral interferons. However, interferon-stimulated gene products that inhibit CoVs are not well characterized4. Here, we show that lymphocyte antigen 6 complex, locus E (LY6E) potently restricts infection by multiple CoVs, including SARS-CoV, SARS-CoV-2 and MERS-CoV. Mechanistic studies revealed that LY6E inhibits CoV entry into cells by interfering with spike protein-mediated membrane fusion. Importantly, mice lacking Ly6e in immune cells were highly susceptible to a murine CoV-mouse hepatitis virus. Exacerbated viral pathogenesis in Ly6e knockout mice was accompanied by loss of hepatic immune cells, higher splenic viral burden and reduction in global antiviral gene pathways. Accordingly, we found that constitutive Ly6e directly protects primary B cells from murine CoV infection. Our results show that LY6E is a critical antiviral immune effector that controls CoV infection and pathogenesis. These findings advance our understanding of immune-mediated control of CoV in vitro and in vivo-knowledge that could help inform strategies to combat infection by emerging CoVs.

Saw a good study at least a month ago that concluded people were most infectious just before, and just after, symptoms show.
Just for old times sake: another “outside report”.
Had to go to the big grocery and the state liquor store in the big city (pop 2,000).
First time wearing a mask.
I see why people hate them irrationally- just feels wrong.
Anyway, required to wear it in liquor store, so did.
Went ahead and wore it in grocery store but was the only customer to do so. Employees wore them. Sneeze guards at cashiers.
Heck, was only ten customers in the whole store so no big deal.
But the state mandates masks and cases are quickly rising here- though still very low- so I thought it best.
Only thing I didn’t find was disinfectant spray.
At home I took off shoes and washed hands
It was a really hard adjustment for my husband to wear a mask for work, back in April. IHe got used to it, but still had to go out in the parking lot and take breathers. I think 4 hours is around his longest stretch. He wears them shopping, but we do mostly curbside or delivery now.
