U.S., Iran Approach Showdown Over Oil Tankers Headed for Venezuela
Washington Free Beacon ^ | May 22, 2020 | Adam Kredo

Posted on 05/23/2020 5:20:41 AM PDT by kevcol

Five Iranian oil tankers are currently making their way to Venezuela, where they intend to bust an economic blockade established by the Trump administration on President Nicolas Maduro
.
.
.
Iranian military leaders said their oil tankers would reach the Caribbean in the coming days. In response, the U.S. Navy has already deployed several ships to the area.

Both Iran and Venezuela have threatened violence if the United States intercedes in the shipment. And while the Trump administration would not telegraph any actions it may be planning, U.S. officials made clear the United States does not intend to let Iran expand its malign influence into Latin America.

“ I recall him talking about the Mexican government and the help they are or are not giving at a certain point in time.”

I don’t recall that. But I know he hasn’t declared the cartels a terrorist organization, even though they’ve on our border and they’ve killed many more Americans than the far-away regimes he’s obsessed with bringing down (like Iran Syria and Venezuala)

The Bush-Cheney neocons spent 8 years ignoring our borders while obsessing about border disputes in the Middle East. Pompeo seems to carry on that tradition

I misread but I thought neither country had refining capacity.

Because the idiots the Maduro regime put in charge of the refineries they seized from US companies screwed everything up. The can barely turn out gasoline and kerosene, much less diesel from their OWN crude oil.

Who is refining the crude? Iran does not have the capabilities and that seems to be missing in all the stories.

Iran, Cuba, Russia, and the People's Republic of China are engaged in malign activities ...

So, Germany hasn't officially signed up yet? China and Iran want us fighting on several fronts at the same time. How charming...

If they fulfill the property holding and taxpaying requirement today then they should be the only addition to the earlier restrictive rules.

There you go

They are importing gasoline. Venezuela has the dirtiest oil to refine on the market. A refinery has to be purpose built to handle it. America used to be their market, but we are rapidly converting refineries to handle what is called sweet crude. It’s likely that with the glut of oil nobody will buy Venezuela’s oil as it costs too much to refine. According to articles I read, Venezuela traded to buy the gas. I suspect that one of the trades is an Iranian base or port, which would be a threat...

Thanks for sharing.

Excuses excuses. Pompeo focuses on borders in the Middle East and Venezuela, not America’s borders. The old Bush-Cheney-McCain mentality

And it took Navarro to advocate for closing flights from China. Pompeo was focused on Syria at the time. Again, like a typical Cheneyesque neocon - ignore the real threats and obsess about MidEast regime change

"I misread but I thought neither country had refining capacity."

Both do, but the Venezuelans have screwed theirs up so badly with inexperienced operators and defection of experienced operators and managers that it is no longer fully operational. Iran's "does" still work. Neither has enough refining capacity to refine all the oil they produce, and never did.

I meant spools of cable. I was in Navy JROTC in high school. Was on a two week summer cruise on the Lexington in 1982 as part of the program. It was a training carrier by then in Pensacola. We were berthed where the Marines had vacated. That cured me of wanting to join the Navy, so I followed my father into the Air Force. Spent my whole life (55 years and counting) with the Air Force. Born on an AF base, 20 years in, and now in civil service.
