Opinion: Joe who? Biden’s the likely nominee, but readers are oddly quiet about him
The Los Angeles Times ^ | May 16, 2020 | By PAUL THORNTON

President Trump isn’t very popular among our letter writers, but have you heard what many of our readers are saying about Joe Biden?

Neither have I, and it’s my job to read everything, even the unpublished letters.

What we’ve received this week about the former vice president has been a smattering of letters on the Tara Reade sexual assault allegation, a few criticisms of his quiet campaign and some quick takes on Trump’s “Obamagate” obsession.

This isn’t to say the letters are indicative of a campaign that is going unwatched by voters, but having edited the letters page during the 2012 and 2016 elections, I can say that such a dimmed focus by our readers on a major political party’s likely nominee is, shall I say, unusual.

Jeffrey Whitefield of Santa Ana, who writes frequently from a right-of-center viewpoint, doesn’t understand Biden’s appeal:

I have watched Biden the last few months. Does he inspire others through his leadership? The answer obviously is no.

So why will he almost certainly be nominated for president by the Democratic Party? He’s not at the top of his game, he’s prone to making verbal mistakes, and he does not have a coherent message. I can’t imagine him leading our country.

A entire political party deliberately blinding itself, trying to grasp hold of power and control, and in the process enslaving itself. It is like watching a train wreck in slow motion, morbidly fascinating

How quaint, a letters page with 4-6 selected letters from readers out of hundreds or thousands.

These days the media has mostly turned off comments on their articles.

Just like Cortez, Joe is a glass of water the Democrats think that people vote for just because there’s a D by his name. Only this isn’t one special district where get away with that hope, this is the whole country.

Uh-oh. Is the LA Times the first crack in the Dem "armor"? Is this the beginning of dumping slow Joe for The Witch (Clinton), or worse, the Wookie?

I think the Dem convention will be a hoot to watch. I can see them now, all melting away saying, "What a world! What a world!"...

This is a guy who didn’t even campaign in most states in the primary and still won. Voters are dumb and won’t be cured in November.

Here's the conspiracy theory; The Dems want Joe Biden to be the candidate, and to lose big-time to Donald Trump. They realize that Barack Obama was a huge mistake, and they think they can punish Obama by making Biden the 2020 victim of the Trump Train. They also recognize that having Stacy Abrams, Kamala Harris or Elizabeth Warren the first woman President would be an even bigger mistake than Obama as first black President.

So they lose the 2020 election, push Hillary off the front page, get Biden into the dustbin of history, and start over. Next step is to get Nancy Pelosi replaced with somebody who does not alienate half of the country with $12 ice cream being shoved into a Botox face.

So the guy at the LA Times who filters the letters to the editor isn’t getting enough proBiden letters so he writes a column to get more people to write some proBiden letters.

Goebbels is still alive.
And working with the democrat party.

What if Gavin Newsom is drafted as the dark horse candidate?

Doesn’t have Cuomo’s baggage or Hillary’s awfulness. And the Wookiee likes perks & bonbons but w/o any responsibility, so no-go, there.

Meanwhile, the MSM will drag Uncle Creepy to the finish line in a sealed coffin if they have to, and let him out only after sunset.

Confirms my thoughts. Gropey-Joe is not going to inspire millions of people to go to the polls no matter what. He is about as uninspiring as mitt romney or mike dukakis.

The dems will have to step up their usual tactics: ballot fraud, character assassination of Trump, and painting a false, worshipful picture of biden.

Biden is nothing but a lying, murdering, kakistocratic, traitorous pedophile, now wandering through the desolation of dementia.

And the fifth-column leftist media are promoting Biden as the epitome of what the Demonicrats have to offer the citizens of the United States.

Ironically, in this instance, the fifth-column media happen to be correct.

Another POV is old Joe getting into office (Dem cheating, of course), and the Dem Party assigns him a Chief of Staff who would do the actual running of the Executive branch with old Joe as a figurehead. Scary stuff...

I don’t think Biden will be the Dem candidate. They will find a way around him. They screwed Bernie twice, Biden isn’t special anymore. IF he is chosen, they will make sure that #2 is relatively young, female, and minority.

Paul Thornton of the LA Times wonders why there are so few letters on Biden?

Can Thornton be that gullible?

Just like there are fake hate crimes - where the REAL victims are ‘conservatives Americans’ ( https://dailycaller.com/2019/02/18/hoax-hate-crimes-list/

http://www.fakehatecrimes.org/), there are also fake letters to the editor.

Here’s how fake letters to the editor work.

Letters to the Editor are designed in democrat war rooms or Madison Ave ad agencies.

Then a few paragraphs are sent out to known supporters or people who pick up spare change writing - and they’re told the basic points to include in the ‘letter to the editor’ but to put it in their own words. (to make it look more authentic)

People chosen to do this will be within the newspapers natural circulation area and are registered to the party mentioned in the letter. For example, “I’m a Republican BUT I can’t stand.... (fill in the blank with some ‘hit the Republicans’ meme). Or ‘I’m a democrat and I support...(fill in the blank)... They’re fake - straight out of a liberal ‘elite’ democrat war room - but will pass as real with only a casual look...

How to spot them? They’ll show up in papers around the country around the same time. Sound folksy and use many of the same words. Lazy writers will copy the parts that are suppose to be included so it sometimes appears two people have written the letter - one who can write - and one who can’t...(that’s a tell)

A family member of mine wrote two of these type letters decades ago... was paid a small sum and thought it was funny. A retired journalist friend wrote a few for a campaign some years back and shared it with me knowing I’d be pissed off.. we had a spirited debate - as friends do who have different political positions.

Ad agencies use these tactics to push awareness of products too... and some of these fakes appear in the ‘letters to the editor’ also.

I’ve often wondered why it doesn’t occur to the people reading and placing these letters why it’s so consistent that their liberal stereotypes of political groups is so often reinforced by the letters written? That letters from liberals are so well thought out - and letters (often fake) from conservatives are filled with hate and ignorant?

It only takes a few fake hate crime or fake letters to the editor to reinforce ugly stereotypes about conservative Americans. See sites above. Do these people ever wonder why there are no ‘fake hate crimes’ against liberals?

So in conclusion Paul Thornton of the LA Times the reason there aren’t more letters to the editor about Biden is because the BIGS in the democrat party haven’t made up their minds what they want to do to win... Dump Biden? Talk him into quitting? Find a popular replacement? All get behind him. Biden’s a ‘me too’ gotta go jerk? Biden’s a Chinese stooge? Biden’s the savior? Biden’s too old - has dementia? It’ll be well thought out...it won’t be casual and it will be coordinated.

So I can assure you of this Paul Thornton of the LA Times as soon as Democrat BIGS make up their minds YOU and all the other papers that are also not getting letters to the editor on Biden will be flooded with letters - similar conclusions, three of four max ideas on ‘why’ IT MUST happen, and oddly similar from all parts of the country.
