Not necessarily. If they are not doing a test for antibodies, but only for the presence of Covid, they don't know if the sailors developed antibodies or not. BUT...there are a huge number of unknowns about this bug.
Not in this case, where they were already known to be sick.
The presumption is that the two negative tests were false negatives. Nobody actually thinks they “got the virus again” — there’s nobody on the ship to GIVE It to them again, and they are not interacting with others.
I don’t know why we don’t have a blood test for this. They are doing nasal passage swabs, which is probably good for a quick check when you are GETTING INFECTED, but probably not when you are getting over it. It’s going to be buried inside, not sitting around in your nose.
There is that one poor girl who has been sick for 2 months, and still tests positive. I feel bad for her, although her symptoms are minor.
Actually, there is. The company my wife works for uses a test that checks for TWO antibodies, TgG and IgM. If you have IgM and not IgG, it means you MAY still have the virus, and they do a test for Covid to check. If the Covid is positive, back into quarantine you go. If you have IgG and NOT IgM, it means you are "really" over it, and can come back to work.
All 5 “relapsed” sailors became ill with moderate ILI symptoms, which triggered the retests that found all 5 positive. It seems something else is going on here. It’s possible their CV19 infection made them susceptible to some weak virus that would normally not give you symptoms at all, or the person performing the “negative” swabs sucked at their job. It’s not as easy as it looks, and you have to have no sympathy for the patient that might cause you to “go easy” on them.

Seems the doctors don’t know...fact set keeps evolving...But then this is not necessarily a naturally occurring virus...not sure old rules apply...asymptomatic transmission, conjunctivitis, loss of taste and smell, sore toes, Kawasaki syndrome in kids, kidney issues, lung scaring, etc...
Had they been asymptomatic after the first positive test? Was the first test a false positive? Were they also tested for influenza A and B. Was their blood sampled and cultured for live virus?
See all the holes in this article. What scientific steps were undertaken to prove the veracity of the claim of re-infection or reactivation?
Unlike the SK study where all these questions were explored to definitively find out if such a thing was possible. The answer was human error and fallible testing. The virus is not different from others in its classification. It is not a horror film virus that magically resuscitates itself.
PCR is not a test of cure.
The test is very accurate. It just can't do what they are asking it to do.

If the virus is knocked out by something other than your immune system, before your immune system can develop anitbodies, then you can get it again as soon as the knock out agent is removed.

the test that has been in use has a false positive rate of 30%. But this is not the headlines that were desired.
