Think we have military primacy over China? Think again.

China would start it, and the attack would be carried out in an unexpected way.
We can add to that that cultivating fanatic nationalism, leavened by a desire for revenge

Does this not read like a ‘little bit of history repeating itself’, as the song says.

You are not going to start a war with someone who not only owes you lots of money and on whom you depend on for food but also provides you with a source of income.

“Tried to tell students in high school that the way we were going, China was going to defeat us. They wouldn’t study, wouldn’t learn, no interest in excelling at what they did, lied, cheated, stole things and got in to drugs, alcohol and pre-marital sex.”

I understand your frustration. My very best students were as good as any in the world. Trouble was there weren’t all that many of them. Far too many were as you describe. The Chinese work ethic seems to be much stronger than ours—the old Protestant work ethic is now a thing of the past. The old joke, go to a college library on a Saturday night and who’ll be there? (remember colleges and open libraries?)

And on top of that, statistically China should have 4 to 5 times as many geniuses as we do just because of the population difference. However, they don’t enjoy freedom and that may make a difference. Also, we’re pretty good at waging war. We might not win, but we tend to punish the enemy a great deal.

And after that they get crushed.

Huh... this almost feels like the old “We must capitulate to Russia because anything else will lead to nuclear war and that’s unwinnable” narrative.

Hi.

Imho, David Ignatius is full of male bovine excrement.

IIRC, in every unit I was attached to in FTXs/war gaming, we lost.

Just sayin.

Case in point: the CVN Ford do to currently unsolvable problems has become an inoperable training platform and will likely will never see its intended service. While this is bad news for the 12 billon dollars the ship has cost do far, worse news is the Navy is going ahead and building 4 more just like it.

And so is China ... they have four CVNs under construction based on tech they stole off the Ford - and so are stopped in their tracks until the US fixes the problems and China steals the fixes. Sun Tzu back to you China.

As for fanatical nationalism, Gordon Chang argues this is long a thing of the past.

Mr. Chang has been wrong a lot with his constant predictions, at least since 2008, of an imminent Chinese collapse.

As for nationalism, I speak Chinese, have lived in and know people over there and read what people say in print and online. No one will say anything rude to your face, and certainly no one wants to cut your throat just because you’re a foreigner. But it’s surprising how entrenched the narrative of “The West and Japan did us wrong, and it’s our time now, whatever it takes” runs among otherwise ordinary Chinese.

I have no idea about their military capacities; that’s what I am hoping to learn with this post. But the desire to retake at least Taiwan, and to keep encroaching on Vietnam, runs deep. And so things could get bad quickly.

The thing about war gaming is you have to know the parameters to know who won or lost and why.

Since everyone under the sun will be watching, do you really want to show off secret tech or capabilities? Wouldn’t it be better to lose a pretend game and a pretend ship loss?

The Chinese desire for revenge is not against the US, but against the Japanese. But like war gaming, you’d have to know something about the subject and the history.

Ignatius clearly is just another drive by.

200 dollar hammers
````
If you imagine they bought a real hammer for a $200, I’ve got a nice piece of land to sell you just 60 miles off Florida. Where do you imagine all the funding for off-budget black projects comes from?
The bought the hammer for $6.96 in quantity and used the rest for something else.
Looks like Gen. Flynn was not a Sino-phile which is one of the reasons he was targeted for destruction.
Also as an act of good faith, B Clinton gave them, free of charge, the miniaturized klystron switch enabling them to mount small thermonuclear warheads on their now accurate ICBMs.
