Fauci to Rand Paul: 'I've never made myself out' as the only voice on the pandemic

Anthony Fauci bluntly told Sen. Rand Paul (R-Ky.) on Tuesday that he has never put himself up as the definitive authority on the coronavirus pandemic.

"I have never made myself out to be the end all and only voice in this. I'm a scientist, a physician and a public health official. I give advice according to the best scientific evidence," Fauci, the director of the National Institute for Allergy and Infectious Diseases, said during a Senate hearing about the coronavirus pandemic.

Fauci pushed back on Paul's comments that scientists should "have a little bit of humility" because they do not know what's best for the economy.

"As much as I respect you, Dr. Fauci, I don't think you're the end all. I don't think you're the one person that gets to make a decision," Paul said. "We can listen to your advice, but there are people on the other side saying there's not going to be a surge, that we can safely reopen the economy, and the facts will bear this out."

Fauci responded that he doesn't give economic advice.

"I don't give advice about anything other than public health," Fauci said.

Paul, an ophthalmologist, predicted that there won't be a surge in positive cases and deaths in states that are currently reopening their economies.

Paul said he thinks public health officials who model diseases should own up to being wrong if there's no surge, "because I think that's what's going to happen. In rural states we never really reached any sort of pandemic levels in Kentucky and other states."

Paul also suggested that children should go back to school in the fall because he thinks they are at low risk for catching COVID-19 and have such low levels of mortality.

Fauci responded, noting that humility is saying there's a lot people don't know about the virus, especially about its effects on children.

"We really better be very careful, particularly when it comes to children, because the more and more we learn, we're seeing things the virus can do that we didn't see from the studies in China or in Europe," Fauci said.

"You're right, in the numbers that children, in general, do much much better than adults and the elderly, and particularly those with underlying conditions, but I am very careful and hopefully humble that I don't know everything about this disease, and that's why I'm very reserved in making broad predictions," Fauci said

Since you’re so certain that the lockdown saved millions, would you care to give me an estimate?

Sweden currently has 328 deaths per million. If we had done exactly what Sweden did, including all the *voluntary* social distancing many Americans seem to have a problem with, 328 x 330 = 108,240 dead. Considering we currently have around 83,000 dead that's 25,000 lives saved.

And I saved my mother from a broken back at least a 100 times as a kid by avoiding cracks on the sidewalk

Hong Kong flu killed a million people in 1968-
69

Asian flu killed close to 2 million people 1957-58

Coronavirus has killed less than 300,000 worldwide

You asked a question. I answered it. If you see any discrepancies in the math I did please let me know.

You are comparing Asian/Hong Kong flu deaths over the course of 6 months - 1 year to CV deaths over the space of 2.5 months. Not a valid comparison.

You have to be a scientist to understand covid19 but any human being can understand that if you do not work you will not eat and neither will your children.

My question was when will corpses be lining the streets in Sweden as many predicted?.. Dazzle me with your brilliant math skills and tell me how many extra people have died in Sweden due to the fact that they did not lockdown, based on your calculus of 25,000 lives saved in the US?

1st wave of Hong-Kong flu was much worse than 2nd wave..... No lockdown, no social distancing.... Lots of naked hippies dancing in the mud at Woodstock

300,000 deaths is not from 2 and a 1/2 months.... Virus has been around since November

Better yet show me a calculation of the additional lives lost due to a crashed economy and hospitals being shut down due to lack of patients.

Dr. Fauci is the informed spokesman for a legion of scientists. You denigrate him you also denigrate the team.

So now Fauci gets all humble-like? Sorry Dr. Fauci but false-humility isn’t a good look for you.

“In rural states we never really reached any sort of pandemic levels in Kentucky and other states.”

A little perk that comes from living in fly-over country.

Your biblical wisdom forgets one thing. Fauci’s information comes from a team of scientist and correspondence from around the world. He is “seeking a wide range of advice.”

Really? Well you could have fooled me. He's got the most limited, narrow-minded viewpoint on this of anyone I could even imagine. And I suspect that he'd be too arrogant to listen to advice from anyone.

Doesn’t matter if he did or didn’t. The left did.

Bingo. And it doesn't matter what Fauci said after his opening remarks, he gave the Democrats what they wanted at the very beginning. Democrats have their talking points and now they're going to demand keeping the economy shut-down, print endless supplies of FREE money all in the hopes of getting the hapless Biden elected.

I used to think there was no way Biden was going to get elected and now ... the Democrats just keep moving the goalposts and stalling so that each passing week sews more indecision on the Republican side and all they're waiting for is someone other than Mittens Romney to crack and go over to their side.

That's their entire strategy, that's crystal clear.

“Dr. Fauci is the informed spokesman for a legion of scientists. You denigrate him you also denigrate the team.”

The exact same logic used by climate alarmists to describe Al Gore.

Math was not my best subject, but I’m coming up with an extra 750 deaths in Sweden from not locking down, based on this clown’s calculations.... Seeing as Sweden’s population is roughly 3% of the US...... So I guess they should have shut down their economy and caused massive debt and unemployment to save 750 elderly people

Thanks. Great list of links.

Don’t forget Fauxci, Birx, and Redfield monetized AIDS, and continue to monetize AIDS to the tune of billions. They put political correctness ahead of the safety of patients, medical personnel, blood recipients, and hemophiliacs. Fauxci touted AZT, a highly toxic drug that killed some. He still hasn’t come up with that vaunted AIDS vaccine.

He holds patents for inventions created at tax payer expense.
