Anthony Fauci bluntly told Sen. Rand Paul (R-Ky.) on Tuesday that he has never put himself up as the definitive authority on the coronavirus pandemic.
"I have never made myself out to be the end all and only voice in this. I'm a scientist, a physician and a public health official. I give advice according to the best scientific evidence," Fauci, the director of the National Institute for Allergy and Infectious Diseases, said during a Senate hearing about the coronavirus pandemic.
Fauci pushed back on Paul's comments that scientists should "have a little bit of humility" because they do not know what's best for the economy.
"As much as I respect you, Dr. Fauci, I don't think you're the end all. I don't think you're the one person that gets to make a decision," Paul said. "We can listen to your advice, but there are people on the other side saying there's not going to be a surge, that we can safely reopen the economy, and the facts will bear this out."
Fauci responded that he doesn't give economic advice.
"I don't give advice about anything other than public health," Fauci said.
Paul, an ophthalmologist, predicted that there won't be a surge in positive cases and deaths in states that are currently reopening their economies.
Paul said he thinks public health officials who model diseases should own up to being wrong if there's no surge, "because I think that's what's going to happen. In rural states we never really reached any sort of pandemic levels in Kentucky and other states."
Paul also suggested that children should go back to school in the fall because he thinks they are at low risk for catching COVID-19 and have such low levels of mortality.
Fauci responded, noting that humility is saying there's a lot people don't know about the virus, especially about its effects on children.
"We really better be very careful, particularly when it comes to children, because the more and more we learn, we're seeing things the virus can do that we didn't see from the studies in China or in Europe," Fauci said.
"You're right, in the numbers that children, in general, do much much better than adults and the elderly, and particularly those with underlying conditions, but I am very careful and hopefully humble that I don't know everything about this disease, and that's why I'm very reserved in making broad predictions," Fauci said

Fauci is a bureaucrat as much as a “doctor” or “scientist.”
I don’t think we will replace one bureaucrat with bureaucratic advice focused on stopping deaths with another who will recommend a wholesale reopening of the country deaths be damned.
I don’t disagree that he appears to be friendly with people on the left, but he lives in a pretty liberal world and his peer associates are in the WHO, the UN, and government bureaucracies here in the US. Not exactly a bastion of “right thinking.”
I reflexively do not really like him. I think he has been wrong about many things since this first began. However, if I am honest, I have to admit that MANY of his peers were wrong from the beginning, the media wildly politicized all of this, political partisans have made him an “either or figure” through no fault of his own. In the end, we will never know who was wrong and who was right.
There is nothing the man could say or do that would not upset half the country seemingly. In the end, it is likely that most of the country will not like him and each of us will have our own opinion about him.
That is how I see it and I have certainly voiced my disagreements with our approach to this virus. I think we should continue to shelter and protect the elderly and vulnerable with utmost effort. However, it is time for the rest of us to return to work as we have little to fear.

Ultimately, Trump and the governors run the country. The doom doctors definitely have a huge influence on events right now, but that is no different than Generals in a time of war. There are many parallels and all of us are trying to make sense of the chaos through the prism of media bias and politics.
I pretty much posted what you wrote above over a month ago in expressing my frustration that Trump was not recognizing the different risks based on age and health in crafting his response. In hindsight, I am not sure I was right then or that you are right now because we are all being pulled right (or left) with the coverage.
You might be right and I will concede that, I just need more data on all of this (pun intended) before I name Fauci “the most evil SOB in the world” (paraphrased from another FReeper).
I am anxiously awaiting the rest of my coworkers to return to the office. Being an essential and one of the few who haven’t changed their work routines over the course of this stay at home craziness is at times difficult.
I don’t think anyone has given aspirin to a child for at least twenty years. It’s pretty well accepted now that this is a dangerous thing to do.
