Probably outdoors exposure as much as anything. There is a video or two on youtube by a Dr. John Campbell in Britain who I believe discusses this.

There’s very little Vitamin D in food sources. The body makes most of the Vitamin D it needs via a reaction of sunlight on your skin. Depending on your latitude, cloud cover, darkness of your skin, and amount of clothing you are wearing, you just need to get outside for a few minutes every day. There are calculators on the web that tell you the time needed. In mid latitudes at sea level with shorts and t-shirt, I need about ten minutes a day.

The best thing is have your doc check your Vit D level in a blood panel workup.

Sunshine and milk fortified with vitamins A&D. As mentioned earlier, skin cancer protection (spf, hats, long sleeves, long pants) limits vitamin D absorption. Pick your poison. Vitamin D supplements are inexpensive, readily available. Don't take mega doses of vitamin D--no matter what you read on the internet--without discussing with your physician. There is a lab test to measure your vitamin D level.

Vitamin D is a fat soluble vitamin, stored in the liver. If you have liver problems or take other meds, definitely discuss with your physician before taking any supplements.
