Cuomo's Fake 'How Much Is a Human Life Worth?' Rhetoric
Townhall.com ^ | May 6, 2020 | Larry O'Connor

There's sanctimonious, self-serving preening that offends the sensibilities of average American citizens and then there's the latest obnoxious hectoring from New York's Governor Andrew Cuomo.

At his daily coronavirus briefing Tuesday, Cuomo addressed increasing pressure to resume some level of commerce and normalcy in America.

"How much is a human life worth?" Cuomo asked the fawning press and the ever-present television lens. "That's the real discussion that no one is admitting openly or freely. But we should."

The question is a false and manipulative piece of political rhetoric meant to appeal to emotions and feelings, not rational thought. But, such hyperbole is the coin of the realm for Democratic politicians these days.

How this man gets away with preaching to the rest of how much he cherishes human life is a mystery. "Mr. How Much Is A Human Life Worth" celebrated legalizing the medical killing of a baby up to the moment of her delivery from her mother's womb by igniting the One World Trade Center pink light, the same color used to celebrate the birth of that same baby girl.

"The faster we reopen, the lower the economic cost — but the higher the human cost, because the more lives lost," he said. "That, my friends, is the decision we are really making."

Spare me, governor. These are decisions leaders make every single day.

In New York State, the maximum speed limit on state highways is 55 miles per hour. However, science dictates that many lives would be saved if the governor reduced those speeds to 30 miles per hour. I mean, that's just scientific fact. So, why doesn't he do that?

As Cuomo constantly screeches about how his decisions are governed by science and not politics, shouldn't he explain why he ignores the science of lowering speed limits to save lives?

But, beyond that, these are decisions we all make every day for ourselves and our children. Letting your child play soccer or ride a bike or go swimming puts them at risk of injury or even death. Does that possibility prevent us from allowing our children to play?

The false choice laid out by Cuomo in such calculated histrionics is also false and manipulative because science proves that the drastic and devastating economic paralysis brought on by government mandate will inevitably lead to terrible health repercussions, including thousands of deaths.

As I noted in a previous column, an exhaustive study from Lancet showed well over 500,000 excess cancer deaths worldwide as a result of the 2008 economic crisis, in addition to more than 10,000 "economic suicides" at that time. Those lives are just as precious and the deaths just as tragic as a death resulting from the coronavirus. Why is Governor Cuomo allowing those deaths to occur? Why is a COVID-19 death more significant than the economic hardship-related deaths he and his policies are causing?

In reality, Cuomo's politically motivated lecture (complete with PowerPoint slides demanding we all put aside partisanship and come together as a nation) may have been an elaborately staged distraction from the real news out of New York Tuesday.

Perhaps Cuomo pounded the table and preyed upon the emotions of reporters and cable news anchors to distract from the story they should have been focusing on.

The Associated Press reported more than 1,700 "previously undisclosed" deaths at nursing homes and adult care facilities in New York on Tuesday. I'm pretty sure "previously undisclosed" is a good euphemism for "hid from the public."

Every death at a New York nursing home brings further scrutiny to Cuomo's horrific policy of forcing nursing homes to admit patients who had tested positive for the coronavirus. The number of deaths in nursing homes has now reached over 4,800, and the virus continues to spread thanks, in part, to Cuomo's catastrophic policy.

While Cuomo lectures all of us who want to safely and sanely get back to work while following reasonable protocols to keep the virus from spreading, perhaps some enterprising reporter could ask him whether he ever asked himself if each of those 4,800 nursing home lives he lost had worth.

If life mattered to Cuomo he would’ve have sent infected persons to spread death in nursing homes. THOUSANDS are dead from his role.

As usual Sonny Cuomo is full of BS. There are counties in Western NY & the Lower Tier that have single digit cases.

Schuyler - 7 cases - 0 deaths- Chenango - 100 cases - 0 deaths, etc.

Yet these counties are on tight lock down per Sonny’s edict - NY State will set a record for move outs this year.

The Left says that life should not be a financial decision then we are told that abortion must continue while dentistry cannot because a baby right now causes undo financial burden.

And we are told that some women don’t want a baby to interfere with their career plans.

Stalinists lie. Always

A human life is priceless! That’s why Cuomo spent hundreds of millions of dollars on medical supplies, ventilators, it’s why he provides every homeless person with a safe shelter and free food. It’s why he sent covid positive workers to work at rest homes. It’s why he refused to allow covid patients to be sent to the Navy ship. Because you know, every life is precious.

And he knows how valuable they are, because he claims 39,000 per person for the state. That’s why New York grifters inflated the numbers

Yes the old liberal shibboleth “you can’t put a price on a human life” is one of their most idiotic and if we had an impartial press they would never let them get away with saying it. How many things could we do to save lives but at tremendous expense? How about building a pedestrian overpass at every intersection in New York City?

Dan Bongino has talked about this thought process at some length, and I concur with his point of view, that we all make value judgments about lives, including our own.

We do it all the time.

I like to stake out the extreme ends of issues for two reasons: First, to show that there are often at least two choices, one at each extreme, and Second, to demonstrate that choices can be made on a spectrum.

It is usually that choice on a spectrum that gets our tongues to wagging at each other which is to be expected.

In the case of saving lives, if it cost one dollar to save a life, almost everyone in every instance would say “Yes, of course that is worth it.”

However, if you say it will cost a trillion dollars to save one life, most people would admit that, well, no...people die, and a trillion dollars isn’t worth it.

It is then that you see the range of the gray area. It both demonstrates that there are choices, and that we do assign values.

Part of the problem we face is that people in power who want to use this crisis as a political cudgel against their enemies, a tool to effect change, or even simply as a virtue signalling tool, want to treat it as if there is no limit to the amount of money that should be spent to save a single life.

There’s a lot of truth to that including some radical Leftists of the past 50 years who deny that mental illness even exists, they claim it is just a way for society to shut out certain ways of thinking.

There is also a component by which the Left actively promotes chaos and they have written about it.

Certainly turning loose convicted criminals in the name of “COVID safety” doesn’t make any sense.

Cuomo should ban cars and trucks in New York. It would safe many lives and possibly the planet. People could starve in place.

Killing off the elderly in transfers to Nursing homes may be the method New York State is using to lessen the monthly costs of government pensions...as well as Conservatives.

[[Cuomo’s Fake ‘How Much Is a Human Life Worth?’ Rhetoric]]

Unbelievable after he’s been directly responsible for 10’s of 1000’s of dearths by refusing to give HCQ soon enough, and after sending virus victims to nursing homes!

What in the world is wrong with the MSM that they are letting him get away with this crap? I don’t even see Fox holding his feet to the fire for his deadly EO

Cuomo has all the self awareness of a psychopath.

He outlawed hydroxychloroquine, put COVID in senior citizen homes, pro abortion, etc, yup he's one.
