Imported N95-style masks fall short on standards, potentially put Americans at risk for coronavirus

U.S. regulators and state officials are finding a significant number of imported N95-style masks fall short of certification standards, complicating the response to the coronavirus crisis and potentially putting some front-line workers at greater risk.

Recent tests by the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health found that about 60 percent of 67 different types of imported masks tested allowed in more tiny particles in at least one sample than U.S. standards normally permit.

One mask that Niosh tested, sold in packaging bearing unauthorized Food and Drug Administration logos, filtered out as little as 35 percent of particles. Another, marked KN95, a Chinese standard similar to N95, had one sample test below 15 percent, far short of the 95 percent it advertised, Niosh said. KN95 and N95 both refer to standards that call for masks to block 95 percent of very small particles.

The masks are all for show anyways when it comes to these virus’s. They only make people feel safer. Mostly psychological.

So the billion dollars CA Gov Newsom just spent on Chinese masks, to be made by a company that has never made masks or any other medical equipment, is just a scam that will leave our medical personnel unprotected? Who could have seen that coming?

You are absolutely correct. An illusion of safety that very well may be contaminating the healthy.

This should kill Newsance’s chances of beating Bidet and Coomo at a brokered convention. At least in 2020.

We’ve been told the mask won’t protect us but should prevent droplets from OUR coughs and sneezes from spreading it; this isn’t true?

It is disturbing how many people on YouTube show how to wear the “blue masks” (with earloops) incorrectly; they simply stretch it across their faces, some bend the nosepiece correctly, and loop it behind the ears.

Simply knotting the loops close to the mask material pulls it much closer to your face on the sides. If you’re breathing too easily, it isn’t doing its job.

The N95 mask, when worn correctly, is very uncomfortable - it is definitely filtering air.

The fact that we need to import anything to fight a crisis like this shows everything that is wrong with these free trade deals.

A convenience store near me that is selling the cheap blue ear-loop masks has removed a sticker on the plastic packaging; I suspect it said “Made in China”....

that was the idea- but not the whole thing- just a ‘ring’ of nylon- it is supposed to increase the effectiveness by upwards of 50% or more- tests showed it stopped particles about 80% I believe the study said- compared to about 20% for homemade cloth masks
