Maine restaurant loses health and liquor licenses after defying state virus orders

NEWRY, Maine — The co-owner of Sunday River Brewing Co. in Newry who defied state orders by opening his doors to diners on Friday afternoon has lost his state health and liquor licenses, he said.

Restaurants must obtain state heath licenses to legally serve food.

More than 150 people came to Sunday River Brewing Co. in Newry on Friday afternoon after co-owner Rick Savage announced Thursday night that he would reopen in defiance of state orders meant to prevent the spread of the coronavirus.

After learning that he’d lost the licenses around 4:30 p.m., Savage initially said he planned to keep operating the restaurant and just pay the daily fines that he would face. However, later in the evening, Sunday River Brewing Co. posted a Facebook post stating that the restaurant would be closed until further notice.

Frustration with the state’s coronavirus-related business restrictions has been growing in some circles, but the restaurant’s deliberate act of disobedience appeared to be the clearest example yet of those tensions boiling over in Maine.

Although the restaurant initially said it would open at 4 p.m., it started serving food after people showed up around noon in defiance of a March order from Gov. Janet Mills that barred dine-in restaurant service.

By 4:30 p.m., the crowd of diners lined up around the building on Route 2 had grown to a peak of around 150. By 6 p.m., the restaurant had served roughly 250 people, according to an employee.

Savage, who announced the restaurant’s opening on Fox News on Thursday night while criticizing the Democratic governor and reading her cellphone number on the air, said that he was not worried some of the diners coming from areas with more documented coronavirus cases would spread it in his restaurant.

That was partly because he was enforcing distancing guidelines that other businesses have adopted during the pandemic. If Home Depot, Lowes and Walmart “can do 6-foot spacing and be open,” then his restaurant could as well, he said.

“I really don’t believe it. I don’t believe it at this point,” he said, when asked if it might be dangerous to let those diners into the restaurant. “I’m not a medical expert. I serve food, you know.”

As for the many diners standing less than 6 feet from each other while waiting for a seat, he said, “I can’t tell them where to stand and what to do. We’re America. If they want to isolate, they can isolate.”

Violating orders made under the governor’s emergency powers are punishable as a misdemeanor crime and the deputy director of the state’s liquor regulator said Savage could face a penalty if he opened to dine-in customers.

By letting the Rats be Rats, Trump shows us how really ratty the Rats can be in a crisis!

Before mid-March, we lived in Trump World. Despite a lot of Rat shenanigans, we were winning bigly with the roaring economy and acquital after impeachment.

Afterwards, when the ‘rona reared its ugky head, Trump listened to experts and followed recommendations for “flattening” the curve with stay-in-place orders. This lead to an economic shut-down, prompted the stimulus and explosion in debt, and opened the hospitals to ‘rona patients while _closing_ them to patients that were scheduled for other treatments and surgeries.

We are now living in Rat World. This is the world the Faucis, Birxs, Schumers, Pelosis, Whitmers, Cuomos, deBlasios, and Lightfoots want—and want for US! President Trump, as you correcly point out, is nowhere to be seen. He is not to be found in Rat World.

If you recall, Trump wanted to lift the orders and re-open the country by Easter. Three weeks ago. He talked about a V-shaped recovery then. But Fauci and the rest wanted to stay the Rat Course for Rat World. He gave them more time. Now we see the results:

The Rats are playing Rat Games in their Rat World. The stimulus is a football. The experts are still crawling towards their cures, which may be anywhere from 12-24 months away. They’re trying to scare us with ‘Rona: Wave Deux in the fall. People are being arrested for engaging in benign pastimes in city parks that was inconceivable just two months ago. The Rat Governers and Rat Mayors are playing Follow the Fuehrer and forcing people to stay house arrest with no release date in sight.

Remember: that’s Rat World! Raise your recht hand if you want to see more of Rat World!

The people in blue states are fed up and starting to push back. Red Governors and Mayors are starting to slowly reopen their states and cities. Folks there are beginning to talk about returning to work and living more normal lives again. And you can be sure that when folks in the Rat States see how well the Red States are doing by getting on with gettin’ it done, they’ll want some of that action and then the pressure will be on to not be left behind.

But where’s Trump? Right where you expect to find him: in Trump World. We know what Trump World is like because we’ve been there. By staying in the wings for a bit, Trump is showing us what a world without him as President really looks like. And that is RAT World!

And the great thing is that we, the people, get to put pressure on and tell our “betters” that we want to get back to Trump World—yesterday! And if they won’t listen, November 3 is our day to tell we really do want to live in Trump World. And the redder we make the governing bodies, the farther away Rat World recedes in our rear-view mirrors.

So let’s get rockin’ and rollin’ back to TRUMP WORLD!

Yes. As a matter of fact the guy in question is located at one of them in Sunday River. The other winter resort is Sugarloaf.

Wait til the contented vassals learn that their jobs are gone forever, and their good insurance. They have been stolen by Nazi fiends. It will be too late when they awaken.

This is such an obvious abuse of power.

By what metric do we *allow* ourselves to be placed under house arrest? It certainly isn’t over anything.

What is stopping a Governor from using ‘emergency powers’ over the next flu? What if there were a spike in vehicle deaths? Does that count? Shut down freeways? Stop us from driving? What about bad weather? Might it snow? Does that warrant an ‘order’ to not leave the house or face arrest? Or just declaring that being alive in 2020 is just ‘dangerous’? What is the measure?

It’s one thing to fine somebody, it’s another to take away their livelihood. This is Nazi tactics. This is evil. This is what drunk on power looks like. They’re using their power to put their boot on our throats.

Over the next two weeks, going by what the NYC bell curve looks like, we’re going to see new cases of COVID-19 plummet. What is going to be their justification as each day passes? Again, what is the measure? If it can’t be defined then this is simply tyranny - we’re being stripped of our inalienable rights because a Governor decides to, at their discretion, no debate, no representation during decision making.

We’re going to need a ‘day of reopening’. Decided by us, not them - all at the same time. They need to understand they do not have this authority. We’ve given them an inch and they’ve taken a mile.

This should really be quite simple. They can ASK us to “please wash your hands” and “please wear a mask” and “please distance from others considering your risk factors” - but only as REQUESTS. We’re not kids. The governor isn’t our school principal. They aren’t all knowing. They do not have this level of authority. Now it’s being weaponized.

I hear claims about ‘science’ being the driving factor, although they never provide the data and empirical evidence to support their claim. And when does ‘science’ take economics into account? At what point does the destruction of a nations economy become a bigger problem? Who has the right to declare small businesses are not essential? They certainly are essential to all the small business owners. People who’ve risked everything to build a business are seeing it destroyed in the blink of an eye because a governor says so. Who gave them that right?

Initially, because we didn’t have data, we had no idea of what this thing was. Just how bad was this going to be? All we knew was it could be Ebola-on-steroids, a lock-down made sense. What I’ve learned though, is that it must only be a recommendation by those in power. They should have no such ‘emergency power’ due to a virus. We-the-people are the decision makers. If we can see a new virus is Ebola-on-steroids then we don’t need to be told to stay home. We’ll do it on our own. Does the fear of ‘hospitals being overwhelmed’ negate civil liberties? Does it suspend our constitutional rights?

I’m an immigrant to the USA, I was born and raised in England. One of the key differences that I’ve learned, that what makes the USA different than any other country on the planet, is that we don’t allow the wishes of the collective, determined by the leaders of the collective, to rule over the rights of the individual. Individual rights are what is in the best interests of the collective, they come first. In Europe, you’re more likely to be arrested for being ‘offensive’ to people that will become violent at being offended, than being arrested for being violent because you’re offended. This is especially true when offending Muslims, which is almost impossible to not do - by design (a whole other rant!). It’s just easier to arrest the person being ‘offensive’. The ‘collective’ rules that maintaining ‘social calm’ is more virtuous than individual liberty. The only people benefiting are those in power and the mob, it can only end badly.

This virus has paralyzed the American spirit. This hasn’t happened before to any of us. Fear has been used as a weapon to convince us that we must submit to collectivism, that individual rights are now secondary to the collective.

This is our real enemy. We MUST maintain that we’re a nation of individual rights, they come FIRST. We do NOT submit to the wishes of the collective. Those that are elected to REPRESENT us have not been given the authority to decide that our individual liberties can be suspended at their discretion. To do so mirrors the rest of the world, the collective now dictates our individual rights. That our individual rights, given to us by God, are being sidelined by men, for their reasons, should tell us all we need to know. Those we’ve granted authority to are making us subservient to them.

They’re destroying what ‘America’ is. It cannot be allowed. We have a duty, not just for ourselves, let it not be forgotten.

Close down and lose your income, or go to jail. When you lose you income, and you are a business owner or property owner, you are forbidden to earn money.

Who else sees that this is the imposition of the #1 rule of communism, that all private property and the means of production must be in the hands of the state?

The Dems are winning this. All Trump offers is more stimulus.”””

The Dems use POWER legally or illegally as required. The Repubs, no matter how justified, use as little as possible.

I am unhappy with ALL governors, except Noem, and the president. America must open 100% Now! Our great economy will never return, and we will be lucky to avoid a depression. Humpty will not be easily reassembled.

100% right. Well said. America is dying with Mary a whimper. 90% are snowflakes primed for a self-imposed meltdown and conquering.

Agree...that is exactly what is, and HAS BEEN, going on. They’ve not been taught why the USA isn’t Europe. The education system has created a whole generation of snowflakes that will turn to their government overlords for safety when scared - doing whatever they say, without understanding the dangers.

All the people on this forum who seem so pleased with the lockdowns say it's because they know it's "just temporary", it's only for this "emergency.". I hope they remember those sentiments when the Left regains national control and decides the emergency is climate change or gun violence or financial inequality. Sickening.

Exactly right.

While I’m fine with the RECOMMENDATION to ‘stay-at-home’ to not overwhelm hospitals...I reject the notion that it can be an ‘order’ at the discretion of a governor. They’re treating us like a parent-child relationship. We’re adults, with serious rights. All they need to do is emphasize a danger and recommend actions - they have no right to do it with the threat of force.
