I am more familiar with the writings of Hughes and Fitzhughes than Calhoun. I have only read some essays by Calhoun. Fitzhughes ends the first chapter of his book with the statement that “ socialism is slavery”. Of all of the pro-slavery apologists, Hughes wrote the Dimocrat playbook in my opinion.
