India is four times more populous than the US, but has just 2% the number of cases and only 1.5% of the number of Covid-19 deaths. How has the country, whose per capita income is just tenth of the US, avoided being flattened by the pandemic?
There are four possible explanations:
1. The epidemic may have struck later than in other countries. Since epidemics have exponential growth at the start, a small delay can have massive effects on the number of cases.
2. India’s 21-day lockdown may have successfully suppressed the epidemic. Physical distancing is one of the best ways to slow the epidemic and, if anything, many have criticized the lockdown for being too draconian in that regard.
3. India has not been able to test enough to count all cases and deaths. Without sufficient testing, many deaths may not be labeled with Covid-19 for official statistics, leading to an underestimation of the severity of the crisis.
4. India may have protective characteristics against Covid-19. Researchers have proposed that the low share of elderly in the population, the high temperatures and humidity in India, widespread BCG vaccination for tuberculosis, or resistance to malaria have helped India escape the brunt of the pandemic.
First, we can rule out that India is in an early stage of the pandemic. The first infected travelers from Wuhan reached Kerala, southwest India, on January 29. While it is true that Kerala acted quickly and contained a potential outbreak, more carriers reached other states by early March.

How about this simple explanation: No testing= no cases. The US has performed more covid tests than all of the developed world combined thus we have the most cases because we have performed the most tests. People have been dying in the streets of India for years. They are carted off without an autopsy. I would not doubt that recently a lot of those bodies being swept up are from covid.
Imagine CHINA supporting Muslim Pakistan.
The Indians and Pakistanis have been fighting since Pakistan became Muslim. Before that the entire subcontinent was Hindu. The Muslims created "East" and "West" Pakistan.
Bangladesh broke off from "East Pakistan" and became independent Bangladesh.
I've heard that the Bangladeshi language is musical sounding.
Thee border fights will last as long as the Muslim-Israeli wars.

Plus, anyone who has been to South Asia will tell you there is really no such thing as social distancing there. They are some of the most crowded places on earth.

In South India there is so much of colds and flu going around during normal times that your immune system gets a very large workout. Something new from China might be taken in its stride.
But the fact they have many serious tropical and other historical outbreaks defies that logic
Rabies
Leprosy
Dengue
Etc
Probably actual real food too.
That they do and it was my first thought too when I read the headline. I started using quite a bit of the spice about 6 months ago when I started buying it in bulk.
On the other hand India has a higher instance of heart disease so who really knows. Could be it simply didn't get into the population before people started being extra aware of contact and generally avoiding germs.
Very good chance this is true. No need to pad the numbers if there's nothing in it for those who would be doing it.
