Coronavirus spreads in a New York nursing home forced to take recovering patients
NBC News ^ | 25 April 2020 | Suzy Khimm

The coronavirus patients began arriving the last week of March, transferred to the Gurwin Jewish Nursing and Rehabilitation Center under a New York State Mandate requiring nursing homes to accept those recovering from COVID-19, even if they might still be contagious.

At the time, the Long Island nursing home had only one known resident who had contracted the virus, according to to the facility's president and CEO, Stuart Almer.

A month later, Gurwin is battling an outbreak that's killed 24 residents — only three of whom were hospital transfers — and one staff member, who worked in housekeeping, Almer said. And the nursing home is still mandated to take in recovering hospital patients known to have the virus, potentiallly increasing its spread in the facility.

"We can't say for sure" whether the virus has spread because of the patients transferred under the state mandate, Almer said. "But it's certainly not helping the situation."

Three states hit hard by the pandemic — New York, New Jersey and California — have ordered nursing homes and other long-term care facilities to accept coronavirus patients discharged from hospitals. The policy, intended to help clear in-demand hospital beds for sicker patients, has prompted sharp criticism from the nursing home industry, staff members and concerned families, as well as some leading public health experts.

"Nursing homes are working so hard to keep the virus out, an now we're going to be introducing new COVID-positive patients?" asked David Grabowski, a professor of health policy at Harvard Medical School. Instead, he believes that states should create COVID-only facilities for recovering patients discharged from hospitals.

"The existing places that can really do this safely in terms of staffing and building space to keep them separate are ...."

And Messiah Cuomo allowed it to happen..instead of putting these people on the ship to recover from the virus, they were sent back to the nursing home to infect other people, absolutely DISGUSTING

Because its all on Cuomo, if it involved Trump or a Republican Mayor the commie media would be all on it 24/7 coverage..same with Tara Reade, since she accused Joe Biden, not a peep

This is insane. they could have used the Javitz holding area, or the Comfort for that matter. Beds aplenty without killing off the elderly.

The hospital ship was there then sent away largely unused.

The staff on that ship just by virtue of being high visibility was fully equipped with proper PPE and staff who are trained and ready to use it

At this nursing home, that housekeeper was not given proper resources to protect herself. She was likely Living paycheck to paycheck supporting a needy or incapable family. No choice to get herself out of there. And not given proper equipment and training

Andrew cuomo is a horrible excuse for a human. A fraction of a man.

...a New York State Mandate requiring nursing homes to accept those recovering from COVID-19, even if they might still be contagious.

All these garbage regulations and rules keeping healthy people locked indoors, prohibiting businesses from operating, forcing the wearing of masks. Then the State leaves in place an utterly, colossally stupid idea of moving COVID-19 patients *into* nursing homes, where *the* very most vulnerable people are.

If you wanted to engineer the best way to kill people using the virus, this would be it.

A broad swath of nursing homes across the state have already accepted COVID-positive hospital patients in compliance with the mandate, and Gov. Andrew Cuomo has openly criticized facilities for opposing it.

“They don’t have a right to object. That is the rule and that is the regulation, and they have to comply with that,” Cuomo, a Democrat, said in a Thursday news conference.

Not only doubling down on a heartless policy that is killing people, but Cuomo throws in a comment that people don't even have a right to object??? Are you f'n me?

Mark Levin said that the families of those deceased skilled nursing patients should sue the State of New York and Cuomo. Levin said that Cuomo probably has immunity but he should be forced to prove it in court.

This is CuHomo’s fault. But since he’s a democrat, not only will he never face repercussions, we’ll never really hear about it outside FR.

So why the heck did he need the Comfort and Javits center to be empty if he was sending them to nursing homes to kill others?
