I’d think you’d be a lot safer on a California beach than in a New York subway.
That said, I’ve never give to the beach and approached within 20 feet of anyone other than members of the party I came with, or touched any item that we hadn’t brought with us.
You can’t tell, from a photo, whether people are keeping distance from people other than members of their household, because you can’t tell who’s in the same household.
What this is really about is jealousy.
NYers know that, because of stupid decisions by their political leadership - not cancelling parades, etc. - they really do need to suffer through strict isolation for another month or three.
But the rest of the country doesn’t.
And NYers hate that anyone else should be able to have any fun when they can’t.

Actually, New York should be the first place to reopen, because it probably has the highest herd immunity by far
