Universal testing for COVID-19 would be the best way to get the U.S. economy back up and running, St. Louis Federal Reserve Bank President James Bullard said Tuesday.
Bullard, speaking on a conference call organized by the St. Louis Regional Chamber, said closing nonessential businesses is appropriate for now but its a crazy inefficient policy. You dont really want to go back to this quarantine policy in the future if you dont have to.
He said that after coronavirus infection numbers start to drop, but without a vaccine available, the nations goal should be to get healthy workers back on the job while keeping the public safe.
Widespread testing of everybody in the economy would put an end to this crisis, Bullard added. We cant get there right now but this is costing us $25 billion a day.
His comments come as President Donald Trump and several governors have formed task forces to talk about restarting the economy. So far, though, states dont even have enough tests for people with known exposure to the coronavirus, let alone enough to test all workers.
Sen. Roy Blunt, R-Mo., told the Chamber last week that antibody tests, which determine if individuals have recovered from the new coronavirus strain, should be available for some by the end of the month and more widely by the end of the summer.
Bullard compared the task of producing hundreds of millions of test kits with the process of mobilizing the economy for war. At these kinds of numbers you really want to ramp that up at all costs, he said. All businesses need these tests, households need these tests, schools need these tests. Everyone needs them because they need to know where the virus is to manage this going forward.

The quarantine should be lifted through several steps. Begin with a disclosure on the false modeling and then announce the actual numbers from the virus. Based on infectious rates on a state by state basis begin rescinding national emergency declarations. Once the federal dollars are removed the state will be forced to open up for business.
Proving that this man is too STOOOOOPID to be entrusted with such a frightening amount of power.”
No. Proving that he knows how they’re doing it in Taiwan, South Korea and Singapore. They’re keeping their economy open by mass testing. They isolate people who test positive, and everybody else gets to live their lives and go to work.
That’s common sense public-health policy. In the US, our officially at CDC and FDA moved too slowly bureaucratically to get a broad testing system developed.
Maybe we should return to the tried and true 300 year old technology of inoculation. Just give everyone a dose strong enough to produce antibodies but not enough to bring about a full blown infection.
Yes, some will die. But eventually everyone on the planet is going to get exposed. Some will die. No matter what is done, some will die.
There will be sports again...as soon as everyone is tagged and tracked.
Past tense — have (already) been infected. Ergo, 85% have not yet had the disease and have not developed any immunity. The question is how to get 2/3 of the 85% immunity before a vaccine arrives. The answer is to get everybody sick, i.e., Pox Parties.
Why? You afraid of death?
Thought the rationale was to flatten the infection curve to prevent saturation of the medical system. Way to move the goal posts again, Deep State.
Very stupid comment.
This country isn’t Singapore in case you haven’t noticed.
In population, devotion to individual liberty, and about a million other ways.
So if we are negative to your test today and the virus mutates next week does your test diagnose that too or do we have to make more new millions of tests?
Tired of partisan, self satisfied losers telling the Country what it must do. These people only have a platform because the Press has nothing else to bash Trump with. Anyone with 1/2 a brain knows this is primo stupid, impossible & error ridden.
85% have not yet had the disease and have not developed any immunity.”
With universal testing, they still get to go to work.
Look at how Taiwan, Singapore and South Korea do it. They keep their economy open by using mass testing to isolate ONLY people who test positive. Everybody else keeps living their lives. Ultimately, this can kill the virus, if the people who test positive are isolated for two weeks until it leaves their systems.
I’m serious that IF we could do universal testing (which I still think is a ridiculous pipedream) the effect would be that everyone who tested negative would immediately go out and find a way to get infected so they could go back to work.
Which renders the entire concept of this lockdown moot.
If, ifs and buts were candy and nuts...
You prove the point. Testing has to be universal and fool proof and frequent. None of which is plausible in a free society. But it makes a great carrot at the end of the Prog stick.
And that would be the forever because the virus does not go away. But buying into the ZERO risk Prog agenda means any scary virus or bacteria or gum violence or obesity epidemic will merit a Corona response.
Exactly...and to go get infected, go to a “Pox Party.”
Pay me now or pay me later but this is the unfortunate answer. And no you don’t have to be tested. But if I own a grocery store, sports franchise, restaurant, etc. then I want to see a recent test result.
Weeks ago every press conference had CEO’s of giant company’s telling us how they were transforming to make ventilators, etc.
Well instead of sending billions and billions in stimulus checks, we spend billions making enough machines and tests so that anyone can get conveniently tested as often as necessary. All I hear is why we can’t do it. Get creative. Think outside of the box. Maybe there of thousands of nurses going street to street, house to house daily for a month as we re-open and they bring saliva samples back to a central location where machines are located.
One perspective I’d like to give is to imagine that instead of most of those dying from this virus being over 80, imagine that those dying are under 10. We would be moving Heaven and Earth to come up with a solution that wipes this virus out clean. And a massive testing testing initiative is it. We either value life as a Christian nation or we don’t.
And if Trump doesn’t do it, watch for Biden to start pushing the idea and the media to jump on board and hang every future death around Trump’s neck. I see that as the only way Trump loses in the fall. And that scares me more than anything.
Testing has to be universal and fool proof and frequent. None of which is plausible in a free society.”
Taiwan is a free society, they do mass testing and keep their economy open and people working.
In contrast, US doesn’t have mass testing and we keep our economy CLOSED and force our population to “SHELTER IN PLACE,” like World War II internment camp. That’s a “free society”? Don’t think so /
the effect would be that everyone who tested negative would immediately go out and find a way to get infected so they could go back to work.

If you test negative why couldn’t you work?
The seasonal flu kills millions every year.
Is there universal testing for it?????
