Want to end the quarantine? St. Louis Fed leader says universal testing is the answer

Universal testing for COVID-19 would be the best way to get the U.S. economy back up and running, St. Louis Federal Reserve Bank President James Bullard said Tuesday.

Bullard, speaking on a conference call organized by the St. Louis Regional Chamber, said closing nonessential businesses “is appropriate for now but it’s a crazy inefficient policy. You don’t really want to go back to this quarantine policy in the future if you don’t have to.”

He said that after coronavirus infection numbers start to drop, but without a vaccine available, the nation’s goal should be to get healthy workers back on the job while keeping the public safe.

“Widespread testing of everybody in the economy would put an end to this crisis,” Bullard added. “We can’t get there right now but this is costing us $25 billion a day.”

His comments come as President Donald Trump and several governors have formed task forces to talk about restarting the economy. So far, though, states don’t even have enough tests for people with known exposure to the coronavirus, let alone enough to test all workers.

Sen. Roy Blunt, R-Mo., told the Chamber last week that antibody tests, which determine if individuals have recovered from the new coronavirus strain, should be available for some by the end of the month and more widely by the end of the summer.

Bullard compared the task of producing hundreds of millions of test kits with the process of mobilizing the economy for war. “At these kinds of numbers you really want to ramp that up at all costs,” he said. “All businesses need these tests, households need these tests, schools need these tests. Everyone needs them because they need to know where the virus is to manage this going forward.”

Can you give me a link to where I can buy the machines? I want to get right on it. ;-)

:::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::

Does it really seem like that should be the impossibility that it is right now? I think it's crazy that if the NFL wanted to buy 1000 machines and fund testing for teams and everyone entering stadiums, they couldn't do it. Trump has always been an out of the box thinker. Capable of getting anything conceivable done. Well this ain't a rocket to the moon and it just might really come back to haunt us that it is not nearly the priority that it should be.

I’m going to the grocery w/o testing, are you kidding?!

::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::

Let me guess. You have no elderly people or anyone that will be close to you who would be in danger if you brought the virus home.

There is the scariest part of this whole nightmare. We have become a nation (and a website) of many who find reasons not to do things that would benefit us rather than overcoming and finding a solution on how to make it work.

Sure, my husband and my mother and since I’ve had my boobs lopped off—it’s probably not good for me to catch, either.

No, I’m not testing unless I have symptoms.

Does your mother go out?

Do you live in a state that has many infections?

I take care of my 85 year old mother just outside of Boston. When do you suggest I take her to a restaurant? A grocery store? Do any of the things she used to do? Knowing that for the elderly the virus is close to a death sentence.

Would you have the same answers if those dying were children 5-10 years old? When would we be allowing kids to go to daycare, middle school, if there was a good chance if they got this virus they die? Well, are the lives of the elderly less valuable than the young or middle aged?
I’d guess testing would be taken a hell of a lot more seriously if it was young children dying rather than the elderly.

::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::

Maybe you miss the bigger point. It’s knowing that you are in a store, restaurant, etc. where you know everyone is negative that is the best part of testing. Knowing that you won’t inadvertently bring it home to a loved one.

And you didn’t answer if you live in a high risk state. It’s easy to say you would casually go out or take out an elderly loved one if there is basically no risk. But states with a lot of infections need testing everywhere in order to safely open up.

Sounds like a very bleak future, mandatory testing or some variation of the same.

I take reasonable precautions.

I don’t go into packed places and I didn’t before this virus. A few years back, I started carrying wipes and sanitizer with me.

I could feel soooo good, going to eat at a restaurant full of people who have tested negative, and then leave to go home, and we are wiped out in a car wreck.

There are no promises on length of life, and so I prefer to live what I have (this moment) to the fullest, and how I like it. Maximum freedom is what I love better than any pretense of security.

Still didn’t say what state you live in and if there are a lot of cases.

I think I know why.

And, by the way, I agree that if you were in a state with little risk you can do what you want. But I’m in Massachusetts. There’s a lot of cases here. And I want testing everywhere because I don’t want my precious mother’s last few years to be in basically a prison cell. And most importantly it’s doable if we just had the attitude that United States used to have that there’s nothing that we cannot get accomplished if we put our minds to it. The same attitude that built Donald Trump many of his skyscrapers.

I’m retired for one so I’m not looking for a job.

Two I wouldn’t bend over for any government mandated BS testing... It would never end and you’d be tested every time you went out of your house to any store, beach, park, game, concert etc. This particular “flu” will probably be around for years or another one like will pop up eventually. Where does it stop? You allow this now then you may as well give up all your rights and submit. May as well get a lobotomy while you’re at it.

Want to end the quarantine? Herd immunity will solve the problem.
