In less than a month, Abbott Laboratories has shipped 566,000 of its highly touted rapid molecular tests for the Coronavirus strain COVID-19 to all 50 U.S. states.
The effort to get the ID NOW COVID-19 test to doctors offices, urgent care centers and temporary testing sites like drive-thru parking lot locations is a snapshot into the massive diagnostic effort under way in the U.S. Abbotts ID NOW COVID-19 test can deliver positive results in as little as five minutes and negative results in 13 minutes.
The test, hailed by Donald Trump from the White House and praised by commercial companies like drugstore chains CVS Health and Walgreens Boots Alliance, was granted the U.S Food and Drug Administrations emergency use authorization less than three weeks ago amid a growing number of agency approvals for more rapid molecular point-of-care diagnostic tests that can be used in temporary screening locations, doctors office labs and nursing homes to detect the Coronavirus strain COVID-19 within a half hour.
The FDA has escalated approvals of rapid point-of-care diagnostics made by other companies including Mesa Biotech and Cepheid which are also ramping up production to meet unprecedented demand. In Abbotts case, however, the company has a much broader global presence than the smaller biotech firms.
Through Saturday, April 11, we have shipped 566,000 of our rapid ID NOW tests to all 50 states, Washington D.C., Puerto Rico and the Pacific Islands, Abbott said in a statement. The majority of these tests have been sent to outbreak hotspots and we've asked that customers prioritize front-line health care workers and first responders. We're currently manufacturing 50,000 tests per day, plan to increase ID NOW manufacturing capacity to 2 million tests a month by June and are working to expand beyond that.

Wait a minute here. The media has been complaining that there was only going to be 5000 of these test kits sent out in the USA in the beginning. I guess we can’t believe our media can we?

That was two weeks ago when Abbott was still starting to ramp up production. I’d like to see what the Mainstream media have to say now.
the massive diagnostic effort under way in the U.S.
If thats a joke its not very funny.
The testing disaster is a national scandal and will have very unfortunate consequences.
” Id like to see what the Mainstream media have to say now.”
Crickets for about three weeks.
"What took them so long?"
WTH are you babbling about?
566,000 Rapid COVID-19 Tests units to all 50 U.S in record time is a joke to you?
“The testing disaster is a national scandal and will have very unfortunate consequences”
Simular thing happened in 1941 Pearl Harbor. We made up for it. We will do the same.
what a great acquisition by Abbott Labs of Alere, who actually developed ID NOW - they are going to make a ton of money.
Lab testing is very lucrative - large companies like Amazon are already building their own diagnostic testing labs, the market for Abbott, BD, Roche, etc will be yuge
South Korea was testing 65000 people a day in February.
We have no - zero - knowledge of population dynamics of this virus and its the middle of APRIL.
566 000 tests are going to vanish in 3 days in a meaningless uncoordinated spaz attack.
Why is Abbott the only company making them? Why aren’t we seeing press conferences like with the ventilators so that any capable company are making these things all over the country 24/7?
If I own a restaurant, sports franchise, mall, etc. make it simple for me to buy them and let me have the most popular spot in town and get rid of this virus in a heartbeart.
So far the dems haven’t been able to see this massive achilles heel in Trump’s plan. But if we re-open and people are dying and you can’t get easily tested, then all bets are off come November.
You need the test equip to process the sample. Those are already in hospitals, labs and clinics.
The new toaster sized processors are be rolled out to be used in places were the large lab equipment isn’t affordable to going to get much use.
Walgreens is or already has set up drive through testing in hot spots.
It’s April 14, 2020. Does your Governor know where your Covid-19 tests are?
330,500,000 citizens / 50,000 tests manufactured per day = 6610 days, or 18 years to manufacture enough tests to test each citizen once.
If I understand correctly, this is 566,000 devices...each device is equipped with ~10 test cartridges, which would result in over 5.5 million tests. I could be wrong, but that’s my understanding.
Yes, thanks for confirming my post #16
ThermoFisher is planning on producing at a rate of 6.5M test kits per month by end of April and then 10M by end of June.
Quest and LabCorp will be combined close to 300k tests per week.
I think one company does 80% of all the testing in South Korea... samples are collected and transfered to a central location for processing
I work in drug manufacturing. Here’s the thing about production that my experience has taught me:
They don’t remember if you were late.
They don’t remember if you were on time.
They don’t even remember who got them into jams or who got them out of jam.
The only thing anyone remembers is: did did it get done right?
If the answer is yes..... then your conclusion is wrong!! I guarantee you can take my statement to the bank.
