As you can imagine, I take the misconduct of today’s journalists very, very personally.
Thank God I’m retired.
When I got into the biz in 1983, there were still old school editors who only cared that I got my facts straight and my copy in on time.
It got worse over the years, but my early retirement had a lot more to do with having to take care of an ailing parent than the increasingly toxic newsroom politics.
I understand and empathize, FRiend.
It’d be interesting (but too late) to know if I’d had that ‘bumper sticker’ printed up all those years ago, how many it would’ve sold.
But adding the ‘excluding most small town papers’ qualifier would’ve taken a bit of the punch out of it .. ha!
That 1945 addendum is mainly based on ‘big media’s’ unconscionable savaging of Whittaker Chambers and Joe McCarthy, though more than likely pre-dates even them by a long shot.
