Why Accepting Two Million COVID-19 Deaths May be Better Than a National Lockdown
American Thjinker.com ^ | April 5, 2020 | Selwyn Duke

We’ve heard much during the Wuhan flu crisis about a “worst case scenario” of two million dead Americans, a staggering number. But missing from the national conversation is something equally important:

What’s the worst case scenario given our present course of action, largely locking down the country and freezing life like an insect stuck in amber?

What if worse coming to worst means a great depression, a descent into tyranny, millions more dead from other causes and a permanently impoverished nation?

Almost the entire virus debate has centered around whether the experts are correct about the infectivity and virulence of the disease and in their projections (which have often been drastically wrong). But even if we assume that the experts having the government’s ear — and there are dissenters who don’t — are absolutely inerrant in their expressed judgments, there’s a problem with just “listening to the health professionals’” prescriptions:

Like most everyone else, these individuals have only a narrow range of expertise; they are epidemiologists, virologists, infectious disease specialists, etc.

They are not epidemiologists-cum-philosophers/political scientists/sociologists/economists.

So they provide counsel on how to achieve a narrow goal contemplated from a narrow perspective. This is not a put-down. It is their job to do just that.

Congruent with this, these experts consider the health-related consequences of the disease, not the civilizational-health related consequences of their cure — which may be worse than the disease.

Death by disease or by hunger andid some new depression.

But if it manages to get the Democrats into the White House they’re good with either.

As long as you’re not one of those 2 million it’s not a bad idea.

You think the economy is hurting now?

2 million people dead, and people won't be shopping for 2 years.

Where does the two million number come from? The reality that is taking place (although with some restrictions in place) doesn’t come anywhere near this sort of thing and would quite likely so even with minimal ones (dealing with the aged and sick, etc).

Well, we’ll just line people up and let you choose the ones who can die. (Not the Kaslin you, the author you)

There will be no 2 million deaths. Period.

That 2 million number was always B.S.

Unless you expected that this virus was somehow going to act very differently here than in Italy.

Where did this 2 million number come from? I don't think it is realistic.

The democrats would accept half the population dead if it gets them into the White House and keeps them there.
Democrats of pure evil; and it starts with murdering babies.

Not forecasts, models or projections. Just data.

(Nobody believes China's numbers, the graph just shows "official" death numbers.)

They are not They are not epidemiologists-cum-philosophers/political scientists/sociologists/economists.

**************

They are epidemiologists-cum-bureaucrats which skews their views as they have agencies to expand and protect.

Guess conservatives are going to have to walk back the talk about Obama’s “Death Panels”

I guess we are cool with more deaths than in all US wars combined.

2 million people dead, and people won't be shopping for 2 years.

Maybe, maybe not. The 1918 Spanish Flu killed something like 600,000, back when the US population was 105 million. With today's population more than triple that, 2 million dead would be the same toll, percentagewise.

So, how did the economy fare in 1919 and 1920?

For the record, I'm a bit over 70, so my personal preference is to err on the side of caution, not to let 'er rip for the common economic good.

Just over 2 million die in the US ever single year from most of them old age and age related sicknesses. I am willing to bet it wouldn't have changed much by year's end.

If we tried to mitigate against anything bad that could possibly happen to us, then we’d never get out of bed. Then we’d be forced to reconsider, after reflecting on the dangers of staying in bed. Most of us are focused on this virus because that’s just about all that we’re hearing about, and it’s what we’re told to do.

What if all that....
Trump is forever branded as the president who chose Wall Street over American lives....
And democrat rule plunges us into perpetual and deepening totalitarianism?

There won’t be 200,000 deaths.

There may not be 20,000 deaths.

Hey, we all the risks. And yes, we will all die unless you are immortal.

However, maybe just maybe while taking these risks, we do something great and beneficial to humanity, our family, our friends.

There’s going to be a lot of people dying from not getting in to the doctors for regular treatment of regular health issues. Like cancer treatments and other serious issues. Possibly more than the corona virus death toll. It seems that no one’s dying from anything else right now according to the State media.
