On Saturday the Food and Drug Administration approved the use of two antimalarial drugs, hydroxychloroquine and a related medication, chloroquine, for emergency use to treat COVID-19. The drugs were touted by President Trump as a game changer for COVID-19.
However, a study just published in a French medical journal provides new evidence that hydroxychloroquine does not appear to help the immune system clear the coronavirus from the body. The study comes on the heels of two others - one in France and one in China - that reported some benefits in the combination of hydroxychloroquine and azithromycin for COVID-19 patients who didnt have severe symptoms of the virus.
I am a medicinal chemist who has specialized in discovery and development of antiviral drugs for the past 30 years, and I have been actively working on coronaviruses for the past seven. I am among a number of researchers who are concerned that this drug has been given too much of a high priority before there is enough evidence to show it is indeed effective.
There are already other clinical studies that showed it is not effective against COVID-19 as well as several other viruses. And, more importantly, it can have dangerous side effects, as well as giving false hope. The latter has led to widespread shortages for patients who need it to treat malaria, lupus an rheumatoid arthritis, the indications for which it was originally approved.
The idea that the combination of hydroxychloroquine with an antibiotic drug, azithromycin, was effective against COVID-19 gained more attention after a study published on March 17. This study described a trial of 80 patients carried out by Philippe Gautret in Marseille, France. Although some of their results appeared to be encouraging, it should also be noted that most of their patients only had mild symptoms.

Yes, my sentiments as well.
True.
That is why I said above that much of this “debate” now revolves around semantics.
Throw in a healthy dose of TDS and that is why we are subjected to this craziness by our media who cannot express the slightest optimism in a possible treatment because Trump expressed hope in it.
Crazy times we live in........
Dr. Didier Raoult's organization:
https://www.mediterranee-infection.com/covid-19/
As of April 3rd, 1,818 COVID-19 patients have been treated by Dr. Raoult's group with hydroxychloroquine plus azithromycin. Among those who received over three days of treatment, only five died.
Notice these words: "RECEIVED OVER THREE DAYS OF TREATMENT."
If you delay starting the treatment until patients are almost dead, they have a good chance of dying.
If you start treatment immediately after a positive COVID-19 test, viral loads will probably plummet quickly, and patients may not even require hospitalization.
Delaying treatment may soon be considered malpractice.
A lot of the crap been said about this disease belongs and the onion. It’s too incredible to believe it’s true
It’s funny when a person wants to make fun of someone’s small study, by citing a worse study.
In this study, they gave the drug to 11 people, 10 of whom were already deathly ill with COVID. 8 of the 11 have other severe problems, as listed:
obesity: 2; solid cancer: 3; hematological cancer: 2; HIV-infection: 1
So they seem to have proven either that people who are about to die of things tend to die no matter what, or that this treatment is not effective if you wait too long.
Given the mechanism hypothesized as to how this treatment works, I’m not sure whether we should be surprised that if you are so far gone you are already on oxygen, it might be too late.
On the other hand, I’ve read that people once on ventilators have a really bad outcome, so the fact that of the 11, 2 cleared the disease after 5 days, 1 died, 2 went into the ICU, and I guess the other 6 were still under treatment. They don’t say how quickly the one died, but they say they didn’t do any monitoring of the dead one, so I am guessing he died pretty early in the process, or they would have had SOME daily stats for him.
It also, and maybe in combination with zinc, will prevent the virus from getting into cells, which I interpret as meaning that if you take it early enough, it might stop the spread of the virus, giving your body less to fight, and maybe preventing it from spreading through your lungs.
It’s funny when they say “it was only given to mild cases”.
In one usage, the guy gave it to ALL of his patients, as soon as they had symptoms. All of them were mild. But would they have all been mild if they didn’t get it?
Of course, we can’t answer that — which is why we do need studies where were take large random populations, and see what happens with and without treatment.
Dude. I dont think you realized, you made my point. Good job!
Hydroxycloroquine serves as a pathway to allow zinc to enter cells. The zinc prevents the virus from replicating. The purpose of hydroxychloroquine is not to clear the body of virus.
grrr
Re: The purpose of hydroxychloroquine is not to help the body rid itself of the virus, the purpose of the drug is to modulate the immune reaction to prevent a cytokine storm killing the person thru overreaction to the virus.

Amen !
Katherine Seley-Radtke. Oh gee. I wonder what her name says about her politics. Look at her picture and tell me she doesn’t have a Resist or COEXIST bumper sticker on her Subaru or Prius. Top it off that this is posted on Yahoo News.

I’m confused. How many of the patients have received over 3 days of treatment? If it is 1818 then 5 deaths is pretty good results so far.
Conservatives can get the Trump cure, but liberals have to wait to next year for something else.
Another French Connection in the creation of this virus. His exclusive video has already been censored, by a French activist who has physical evidence of Frances connection with the Wuhan P4 Lab. go to about 14:00 of 22:33 in the finding for several minutes.

That website could certainly use improvement. I doubt it will be forthcoming, because the IHU (University Hospital Institute Méditerranée Infection) is probably drowning in patients, and everyone employed there is probably drowning in work.
Here's a report on Dr. Raoult's first study:
Here's Dr. Raoult's second, larger study:
https://www.mediterranee-infection.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/03/COVID-IHU-2-1.pdf
My guess is that since those studies were published, the IHU has accepted a flood of new patients, and that almost everyone who tested positive for COVID-19 has been placed on the drug protocol used in those studies. However, the page I linked does not quite say that. It says that the IHU tested 22,394 patients for COVID-19, of which 3,005 tested positive, and 33 died. Among 1,818 treated with HCQ and azithromycin for more than three days, only five died. Yes, that is ambiguous, but Dr. Raoult is not around to clarify it.
Sure am.
‘The Land of Peasant Living”
I will.
Have to go back there Monday.
