The governor is the chief executive officer of the state. It is his job to make decisions like this, not the President or the federal government. By raising this issue Governor Edwards has just publicly declared that he is either not competent to do his job or able to take responsibility for for a bad decision. One, of course does not exclude the other.

The missus and I were supposed to go to the Crescent City this very week to celebrate our anniversary but all our travel and restaurant reservations were canceled out from under us, weeks ago. Sad not to be a able to go but SO glad we missed this cluster.

Yes, we know what it means to miss New Orleans.

southern democrats are a bit unlike normal democrats. LA is rather known for state and local corruption. I suspect the jungle primary system they had there didn’t help matters much; I’m not sure we ran the strongest field in the last election.

The Louisiana governor should have issued a Stay at Home Order and closed all nonessential businesses on February 1st.

Does he need the Fed Gov to tell him everything?

And if it did, would he listen or just bitch about it?

Katrina was 15 years ago. Although the Federal response could have been quicker ("Heck of a job, Brownie"), hurricane Katrina had been filling the entire gulf for several days, a direct hit was possible, and the government at all levels was warning preparedness and caution. But, nobody told them to use the friggin' school buses, or not to leave them parked at a low elevation. Bush's fault!

I just thought LA was a solidly conservative state.

It has significant blue blotches on the electoral map - New Orleans, Baton Rouge and Shreveport, mostly. If enthusiasm is low for a Republican candidate, those urban centers can tip the election to the Dems.

TG&M is the largest gem and mineral show on the planet. And that’s just the official one. There’s half a dozen unofficial shows. It brings people in the gem and jewelry business from all over the world for multiple weeks (official show is one weekend, but the spinoffs run most of the month). Of course that February, things were mellow. But that’s my point. It could have been a blow up vector like Mardi Gras. Or both could have not been. It all depends on how many sick people show up and how many people they infect.

There was no thought about cancelling Mardi Gras. Why would you shut down anything for a flu?

Being a Governor IS a fairly important job.

It is not just a stepping-stone to becoming a TV talking head or a do-nothing Senator. People really need to THINK about that when electing one.

Yet another one. “I’m stupid, and it’s the President’s fault!”

Indeed - I remember all of the media heads criticizing President Bush for “failing to timely mobilize the National Guard.” Uh...that’s the governor that does that, not the President.

“In January, everyone in the country knew that that COVID-19 would be become a devastating pandemic.

With that knowledge, the incompetent leaders of Louisiana did nothing to cancel Mardi Gras or issue Stay at Home Orders.

Had they taken such actions in January or very early February, this disaster would have been avoided.”

Are you including Trump in that “everyone” because he sure didn’t do anything either.

The President does not have the power to cancel Mardi Gras or issue Stay at Home Orders for Louisiana.

The Governor does.

Do the Feds tell you when to go to work? How many hours state offices should be open?

The incompetence overwhelms.
