“Deserve to exist” has nothing to do with it; there was no way we could win the war without a full-scale invasion of North Vietnam right up to the Red Chinese border. That strategy saved South Korea.

Too bad that didn’t end up ending Communism in China. And make no mistake, were it wholly up to me in MacArthur’s shoes, I’d fight to the bitter end, not even let myself back to the South Korean border, even go so far as to outright assassinate Kim-Il-Sung as well as Mao Zedong, and their entire leadership to cut the head off. And no, due to North Korea still EXISTING, to say little about Red China, South Korea’s nowhere NEAR safe. My idea of safe entails North Korea as a separate entity NOT existing anymore, and certainly not as a Communist country. And it sure as heck isn’t a win. I define victory against a Communist country, against any enemy for that matter, in only one way: complete eradication of that enemy.

As far as a full-scale invasion into North Vietnam, not even the Joint Chiefs under Johnson ever considered that bit, and they were the ones who suggested mining harbors and strategic bombings of North Vietnam (and got cussed out by Johnson with enough foul language to have even a Marine at Boot Camp blush). And BTW, said strategy by those Joint Chiefs was EXACTLY the strategy Nixon utilized to actually WIN the war. The source for that bit was “Cheers and Tears: A Marine’s Story of Combat in Peace and War” by Lt. General Charles G. Cooper, and was even cited in The Politically Incorrect Guide to the Vietnam War.

And for the record, the limited war strategy in Korea actually MADE the problems in Vietnam inevitable, and that we won both times (and ended up being forced by Congress to stab the South Vietnamese in the back after Watergate) was in SPITE of limited war, not because of it.

The war in Korea was fought between the UN and North Korea/Red China; like the first Gulf War, a wider goal (the elimination of Saddam Hussein) would not have been tolerated by the wider coalition - and the wider coalition was critical for optics.

The war in Korea was fought to save South Korea, and it worked. The war in Vietnam was fought for a similar goal, and it didn’t work.

Considering that the United Nations is a Communist front, even when Stalin boycotted it during the Korean War (and there was a letter by a Korean War pilot that strongly implies the UN deliberately sabotaged the Korean War to ensure Communism’s victory), I wouldn’t call that a victory. And for the record, the entire POINT of the Cold War was to get rid of Communism, so I’d be willing to fight against BOTH if deemed necessary.

And no, Vietnam DID work, as that Prager University video I linked to earlier demonstrated, which made it very explicit that we actually won that war (and not just our view, but our ENEMIES’ views. If even our enemies realized we won, it means we won). It was members of Congress that stabbed them in the back. And just as an FYI, there’s still American troops in South Korea, so it’s STILL not a victory even if we were to adopt the whole “the South Koreans won and the South Vietnamese didn’t because the latter was dependent on us”, because our presence in South Korea indicates they’re ALSO dependent.

And in case you don’t believe me regarding my claims about the UN:

www.iahf.com/world/un-milit.html (and this is the one that strongly implies that they sabotaged any chance at ending Communism in North Korea, even WITHOUT Stalin being directly involved).

Bien Hoa AB, RVN

Home away from home, although I doubt I spent more than 20 days on the base itself. Out on 20 - 30 day patrols, come back for change of clothes, a shower, and sleep without being on guard duty half the night. Remember it well.

By that token, Germany is “dependent”.

The UN fought to preserve South Korea, not remove North Korea from the map. It worked.

The only way to truly preserve South Korea from Communism IS to remove North Korea from the map, actually. And for the record, the UN if anything was fighting FOR the North Koreans while pretending to be fighting for the South. Have you even READ those articles? Especially the first one? Usher L. Burdick in the first link gave a strongly worded statement that indicated that the Soviets indirectly sabotaged ANY chance of stopping Communism during the Korean War via the Secretary of the Security Council, even WITH Stalin’s boycott, meaning even when fighting in the Korean War, the UN STILL intended to spread Communism. I’ll even quote it for you: “This means that since the Security Council was organized, the Russians, through the Secretary, have had close touch with all military plans. The directives to MacArthur and the reports coming from him, passed through the hands of this Secretary. Now can you realize what MacArthur was up against in trying to win the Korean War?”

And you’re the one who set that token when you implied South Vietnam, by being dependent on America, didn’t deserve to exist since they couldn’t fight off North Vietnam.
