New Yorks coronavirus outbreak has violently erupted over the past few days, and the state is now driving the national epidemic while on the West Coast, public health experts are wondering if an early and aggressive response saved California from a similar fate.
California reported some of the earliest coronavirus cases in the United States in late January. And in the first week of March, California and New York were neck and neck on cases of COVID-19, the disease caused by the coronavirus. But over the past week, New York case counts have doubled every few days, and the state now has nearly 10 times the cases California does: 38,000 to 4,200.
Infectious-disease experts say early maneuvers in California, especially in the Bay Area first discouraging people from gathering in crowds and then ordering them to shelter in place may have had a dramatic impact, even if they came only a few days ahead of those in New York.
But other factors may also be in play. New York is testing far more people three times as many as California and therefore identifying more cases, for example. And its possible that whats happening 3,000 miles away could be Californias future.
New York may just be three or four days in front of us. Were going to see an increase in the number of cases here as well, said Dr. Warner Greene, a senior investigator at the Gladstone Institutes in San Francisco who specializes in HIV but is studying the new coronavirus. Days matter they really matter. You think youre fine, youre absolutely fine, but this thing is just waiting to explode.
But we went into shelter in place quicker; we got people apart quicker, Greene said. That could be a contributing factor ...

Jews call any old person of all 400 sexes alter kocker. In any case this idea that Chinese New Year is a big deal is naive to the point of stupidity. It!s simple density plus seaports and airports that caused the problem.
Probably more tests.
the issue is city density, not state density ...

There are the cities.
Subways and other mass transit
Yes, Freepers need to realize all the happy talk from Pence about more and more tests isnt being experienced on the ground in many places. There are still shortages of components for the testing process, and of protective gear. So many places are limiting tests to patients who are bad enough to be hospitalized
I wonder how much it spread just by people passing each other on the crowded sidewalks.
It sure is and if you’d have waited a few seconds you’d have seen me post those numbers.
I had never heard that phrase before [and I lived on Loogggg Island for a few years].
Counties surrounding the SF Bay area, where CA’s first outbreaks started, were the first part of the country to issue “shelter in place” orders. CA was the first state to issue a shelter in place. But I don’t give Nutjob Newsom credit. It started way before he got involved.
Back when CV19 was just a “Asian Problem”, California businesses were implementing policies of social distancing, canceling travel, moving meetings to teleconferencing and advising employees how to stay healthy. CA was canceling large events and encouraging people to work from home while NY was still encouraging people to ride the subway, go to restaurants, party it up in Times Square, and go to the Chinese Lunar New Year Parade.
Newsom sees this as a political opportunity he can ride to the White House in 2024. Or maybe he wants Cali to secede, as he refereed to CA as a “Nation State” repeatedly a few nights ago.
What’s up with New Rochelle lately? Wasn’t that a major hotspot early on? So worried about Rob, Laura, and little Richie.
Best answer yet!
NYC has the highest Chinese population in the country is what I read the other day.....
Seems like a MAJOR factor:
Over 4.3 million people ride the subway system every day; over 1 billion people go through the turnstiles per year!

And this doesn’t include Amtrak or Metro trains ...

Or the buses that carry 666 million passengers per year ..

Or the ferry system ...

California is relatively suburban even in the densest coastal areas, whereas NYC and environs is like a beehive.
Well Italy is a lot worse than China, for reasons that are not obvious.
Western Europe, especially Spain, is following right behind Italy. And so is New York.
I don’t know about Chinese New Year in NY, but in Hawaii it’s popular and extreme. I worked at a five star resort there, and CNY took over the entire resort - as big as Christmas. (Except we couldn’t say the word, “Christmas”. “Festive season”.) The streets in Honolulu are insane with celebrations.
Since the hot shots in NY were begging people to come, I just assumed it was a BFD there, too. If you say I’m wrong, you may be right and I’ll take your word for it — and I will wake up.
Zero social distancing going on during rush hour on NYC subway.
