President Trump said Friday that he had directed Health and Human Services Secretary Alex Azar to require General Motors to begin making ventilators under the Defense Production Act to combat the coronavirus pandemic after negotiations with the automaker had stalled.
"Our negotiations with GM regarding its ability to supply ventilators have been productive, but out fight against the virus is too great to allow the give-and-take of the contracting process to continue to run its normal course," Trump said in a statement, adding: "GM was wasting time."
Experts say the U.S. is hundreds of thousands of breathing machines short of what it likely will need to treat a rapidly rising number of COVID-19 patients. New York, Michigan, Louisiana and the state of Washington have been singled out as virus hot spots in the U.S.

we gunna have tens of thousands of unused vents sitting in warehouses for next 20 years.
What fumblethumbs at GM botched this PR opportunity?
wth?
He’s going to share with other countries. Probably make a deal with them. Regardless, he said ‘give them to countries that need them’ - something like that.
That would be a great problem to have.
Ass wipes
They cant make cars
Did not New York just “find” 1,000 of them?
The balls on GM to haggle on price when they have already been bailed out once.. step up you sorry company!
Government Motors will never get a dollar from me.
“we gunna have tens of thousands of unused vents sitting in warehouses for next 20 years.
yep ...
And masks, gloves, hand sanitizer and TOILET PAPER!
First we bailed them out
Then they tried to overcharge POTUS on ventilators
Then he had to order them to do this.
Remember the financial crash of 2008. Yeah, the one that Obama used to steal GM from the stock and bond holders and give the corporation to the union. Yeah, that one. The American taxpayer took it in the shorts when that deal was done. Now GM has to be forced by the President to make ventilators. Ford got no help. Chrysler was given to Fiat. But GM was put on life support and now they are being forced to do today what they should have gracefully done yesterday.
GM—make the damn ventilators.
“What fumblethumbs at GM botched this PR opportunity?”
Not good advertisement for GM, but GREAT advertisement for the Defense Production Act, i.e., any other company thinking about screwing around should have second thoughts now ...
Whats a few trillion dollars between friends.
Back in the financial crisis, GM took Govt buyouts, Ford didn’t.
I bought Ford stock. Big loser. Karma is a joke!
Message sent: Don’t mess with this President. He doesn’t suffer fools.
Who want to depend on a Government Motors vent?
