Because you are dealing with populations, the raw numbers mean very little.

How does that even make sense?

Country A 60 infections with population of 200... Country B 50 infections with a population of 100. I could say Country A appears to be worse off than country B. Not really. Country A has 3 infections per capita(1000) but County B has 5 per capita (1000). Unless you account for the population, the numbers are meaningless. We may have passed Italy in total number of cases but you are less likely to become infected in the US. Typical MSM reporting.
